For discussion purposes only, which would you rather feed?
    1) a dog that knows the difference between work and play, that doesn't mind letting the pups jump all over him, but knows when its time to work.

    2) can't be within reach of another animal at any point in time, no matter the circumstances, but has a relaxed demeanor otherwise.

    3) the screamer that claws the dirt out from beneath his feet at the mere smell of another animal and would drool to destroy even the latest kitten.

Whichever one takes care of the job at hand... but if I had to choose from dogs of equal ability, the first one.

I agree it depends on your goals...competitor pre-76 would probably like number 2, while myself, I keep the dog I.side with my family but like to go out into the woods also, so number 1 suits me better.

    I have a bitch that's a combo of 1, 2 and 3.
She can be with pups and play with them, even pups that are not hers but she wil get anything that has four legs, the other adults we have or outside for that matter.
ranging from birds to horses she wil dig the dirth right under her and when you walk away wil keep running cirkels around you to get back but does not make 1 sound.
The only time she wil get crazy and make sounds if you put the prey 1 feet in front of her and she can not reach it after 5 min of just pulling, she wil get crazy and start to scream to get it.
In her general behaviour she is relaxed but start just 1 game and she is hyper, a true sweetheart, the kind of dog that curls up inside you if she can to sleep.

I personally like number 2 like i have said before i like to know which direction my pup is going in before hes even ready to be worked makes me excited lol of course number 1 wouldn't be bad and would still get fed but id rather have number 2

Just a theory i've heard about intelligent dogs. They know when they can't win so they have a higher tendency to quit. Can't remember where i read it, but i thought it sounded like something to think about... Personaly i would probably like no. 2 or a no. 1. I think no. 3 is the typical dog that gives you a real headace. Hurts him/herself, screams all night long, hard to breed and is generally hard to handle.

I thought dogmen pre 76 generally didn't like dogs that killed pups? I thought they thought of them as cowards and not deeply game? Maybe I'm wrong on that count.

I love to watch when Other People own number three. I however would always perfer number 1 but wouldnt have a problem with number 2. Its kind of funny watching someone who owns #3 having to work their ass of on a walk to try and control their dog.

How much of a role do you guys think genetics plays in this vs. The environment that a pup is raised in?

  15. cliffdog

75:15 genetics to environment ratio... imo

Mine right now will grind his paws bloody at anything in the woods, deer, coons, hog, etc. He was in the house from 8 weeks until about 5 months then we started rotating him on and off the chain. Our housedog let him jump all over her but would lay the smackdown when he got too feisty. Now there's 1-2 friends dogs that he could care less about. Everyhing else is food. Good dog. Takes out coon regularly, even got hold of a small deer.
I think getting the deer boosted his ego a bit, big dogs seem to be on his shitlist now.

I have a friend who has two males that hate each other to the core and would do anything to get a hold of each other but both dogs are terrified of all other dogs but each other

I happen to like all three but if I had a choice I like 2 and 3, depending on what I am doing with the dog though.
