before castro, cuba was the real las vegas and a gamblers paradise... birds, dogs and horses always been a part of the gamblers culture and cuba probably was the first island as the cuban livewire proved with sparks hunky in the fifties, which proves they were doing it forsometime before that, probably back to the days of when the spanish cordobas were being crossed to make dogos argintina by dr. martinez in the early part of that century...

With a history of British colonisation the West Indies have a long history in bulldogs. Added to that there have been native islanders active in the US dog scene. Met a "deportee" once who grew up near Baker Davis and owned CH's off Boomerang and Midnight Cowboy, Gr Ch Haunch second win over Chaos, a dog owned by an islander.
The early times though was country rules moving pit, haha, early to mid nineties Cajun rules were employed, mainly influenced by returning or travelling nationals.
One of the early pedigreed imports:

He was followed by the UK dogs from Skipper:

    And off Nelis:

It is also interesting to point out that in another area, certain key UK dogs came to the islands in '91 when the laws were passed

It must be mentioned that Joe Montana spent his last days in the sea and sand along with some of his descendants:

Today, however, the standards of dogs and dogmen are on par with anywhere in the world. The problem is island life is such that after one or two hunts no one wants or could handle the good ones, so most times travelling is a necessity but not always a possibility.

It seems like most of the fast lane kennels are in the islands now. How are they able to stay so active in the islands, are the laws different?

My evaluation always come down to origins...
Both the brittish isles and the states "own" some of these islands we speak of and both are located in the north and are heavily goverened with thier own laws...
Say south of the states, such as mexico and south america the laws are mostly good ol boy corruption, and money rules...
well inbetween are these islands... and even though they are "owned" by the us and uk, they are closer to the southern ways of corruption as the u.s. and u.k. "own" them but dont want to really govern them anymore than a stronghold...
So yes more laws than the south, but no, not as much as the north...
Its very easy to skip from island to island and they might have a very different culture but all share the same passion and compition is fierce...Haitais and DR are not "owned" by the u.s and u.k. as haitias has no laws and D.R. are right behind them...
DR has a steady growing bulldog fancy as some well known dogmen from the states are sending wellbred dogs backhome...

It would be awesome if thier was a spanish site or thread thats translated to english, thre has to be some deeper history of all the spanish speaking areas such as cuba, might be of a great historic value...

Laws are same in the VI, PR, West Indes (Barbados and T&T I can speak of) but they generally have bigger issues to work with. Some good dogmen in St. Lucient and St. Vincent willing to travel. Same with PR and DR. A big thing with these places are resources. The men I know of in these areas generally don't have the time, space, or money to wait on dogs or keep them around just because.

I agree, PR is overpopulated and ny has more prs than pr...
If you cant fit people, there no reason to keep subpar bulldogs and I beleive they are banned on the island making keeping culls even dumber for a multitude of reasons... St Croix used to be the place before 9/11 slowed the tourists...
