One of my dogs has a problem, I think. She started a loose stool Wednesday, and I've been watching her. She is playing and eating O K, but still has a loose stool and now it's a little bloody. She's a little over a year old and has always had firm goes and I'm thinking I should take her to the vet today. Any thoughts on this? Could it just be a case off upset stomach? What do you think?

  2. I'd have her checked out for Coccidia as well as Giardia. Those two are the most common around here. It could be one of many different intestinal parasites or even something completely different. Best thing is to take the dog into the vet, or at least take the vet a stool sample that is less than 1 hour old.

whenever you have a dog w/loose stools DONT FEED THEM FOR 24 HOURS, let them have as much water as they want, but NO food. when u continue to feed a dog with an upset stomach, you are continiuing the problem, the gut needs time to rest.

Id do a day w/no food, then the next day feed 1/3 of what you normally feed in the morning, then in the after noon. If she still has diarrhea that night, or the next morning, id schedule a visit.

  4. i agree with miss conduct, but since she has some blood in the stool i would just go ahead and take her to the vet anyways and get her a check up just to be on the safe side because i never like to see blood in the stool.a up set stomach is normal now and then i mean even we get the runs sometimes, but when ever i see blood in the stool i always have my vet come out and check em out just to make sure nothing major is wrong.

  5. Correct...what I usually do if this type of thing occurs (blood present or not) is fast the dog until he stops deficating altogether....usually a day and a half. When he is ready for food, I give him my "Bland Diet," which consists of plain white rice (plenty of that here in Japan) and a small portion of boild chicken. You can use this diet along with any meds the doc might give you (depending on the situation) until all is normal again. Whether its just upset functions or a Parasitic condition, when in recovery mode - SMALL PORTIONS of the Bland Diet I just described is the key to quick recovery for me. Has worked wonders for years. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I did put her on a rice and beef schedule yesterday, 1 to 1/4. If she still has the problem this afternoon, I'll go ahead and meet with the vet. I thought about giving her a little pepto. What you think?

  7. Not so sure about the Pepto. I know that stuff makes my stomach feel even worse!!! :) I generally stay away from human-grade medication for dogs. Benadryl Allergy is one exception :) I used to have a dog who was extremely allergic to GRASS! How the heck can a DOG be allergic to grass??? But anyways, good on ya for even payin attention to your dogs stools...alot of people just dont do that, which sucks...cuz its a great insight to what's going on inside your pooch.

  8. i have used pepto but i dont wanna say yes and then it make your dog worse.if you are going to give her some pepto give her the childs dose or to be on the safe side give her like half of the childs dose.

    I Wouldnt Give Pepto.

You Will Most Likely Get Metronidazole, I Love The Stuff, It Works Wonders :)

I was always told by my vet no food or water for 24hrs. and then to give a small amount of rice. I would still take her to vet though.

According to E. Faron, pepto is fine to give. I don't have the book right in front of me, but remember him talking about it being one recommendation.

Don't use Pepto, no need to stress yourselves further with dosing, experimenting and what-not. The bland diet will be more than fine, although I'm sure the pup has something going on. Since the pup is acting good except the stool which has become bloody, I can almost garauntee an intestinal parasite. Something easy to determine and treat, bring a stool sample to the vet. Make sure you take care of this, it can always be transferrable to humans and of course other animals as well. Good luck! let us know what comes up.
