my female is going into heat again this is the first since her 1st litter. should i breed her again or wait for the next, i've heard reasons for both but would like to hear more. she is in great shape and came back from the pups real well. pic at bottom of page.

Skip a heat if you feel you MUST breed.

  3. agreed with rock skip this heat.

From what I understand it is best to only breed a female once a year. Since most dogs cycle every 6 mos, that would be every other heat. This is done b/c pregancies are hard on a dog. I knew one fellow who bred his gyp every heat & she was dead by the age of 5.

As for inbreeding, inbreeding does not cause defects, it only reveals defects that are already in the line. If you're running a healthy line a father x daughter breeding should cause no problems. But if you have any little nasties hiding in your line inbreeding will surely bring them out.

As a side note, what were the reasons you heard that supported breeding every heat? I'd like to hear these. lol.

    Hope this helps! ;)

Questions like this make me wonder why people breed. I feel that a person should know the answer to questions like this before they even start breeding dogs period. Me personally I would WAIT, but it all depends on how long it has been since you bred her before.

I guess it would be safe to say that the dog is worth breeding again. If so, then I would wait a year and then breed again. Nothing wrong with giving a mother some rest and I think a year is enough. Some people turn their dogs into breeding machines, but to me thats wrong. JMO

Look it's about love and care and if you 1st love your dog you will not over breed and why it's ethical,it stresses the dog and makes her very emotional i seen cases where dogs smother their pups or even abondon their litters and why becuse they had no mental and emotional rest also remember they will pass this on to thir pups and you dont want that who want's a nurotic dog not me i want a sound dog which brings me to the care part if you care what you breed and take pride in you work the same way that a good manufacter takes pride in their product you gain a good name and do a service for the breed by breeding Strong, Healty,Intelligent and Sound Dogs and that is what we all strive for "RIGHT" <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle>[IMG]</TD></TR><TR><TD>[IMG]</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the domestic dog is the only canine that has 2 heat cycles per year instead of one. This, in itself, is a good enough reason for me to rest the dog for a heat cycle before breeding her again.

I strongly believe that the thousands of years of domestication and breeding practices, with the addition of removing the pups from the dam at 8, and sometimes as young as 6 weeks, has created the twice a year heat in our dogs. Now remember, we're talking almost 15,000 years of domestication. In other canines, non-domestic, the dam will look after her offspring for much longer than 8 weeks. At least until they are old enough to start hunting themselves.

It takes a good 4-6 months just to get your female back to normal, let alone preparing her for the next breeding. I don't believe its fair to their health to breed them just because their back to normal. Let her stay back to normal, and now you've got 6 months to prepare your dog for the next breeding.

  10. good point darkstar ,johnson just look at it this way it is like a woman who just had a baby she would probally hit you with a frying pan if you wanted to try for another baby with in less than a year.you just got to give them time to recouperate both human and animal alike.

thanx guys for that input, i am leaning more torwards a wait till the next heat.
Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't a female get the 1st heat between 6 and 9 months old?? if that be the case, what do you think about breeding on the first heat.

She shouldnt even really be bred till se is 2 - 2 1/2 years old if at all.

  18. I totally agree Marty, what the hell do you need more pups for?? damn if i bred my bitches everytime they went into heat i would have a whole lot of dogs 2 feed and a vet bill 3 miles long.First you need to figure out why you are breeding these dogs.If your answer is money then you need to take your dogs and have them all spayed and chopped. And please stop all breeding practices ASAP!

  19. i dont think about breeding on first heat at all.*Edit-stop the personal attacks, you've been warned-14rock.you have alot to learn and this wont come from spending a week on this site. Please search this site and read on all the mistreated and homless dogs in shelters or on death row, then ask yourself, why do i want to breed again???

no i'm not doing it for money i haven't made one dollar off any pups breed by myself, it's about putting strong well bred apbt in the hands of poeple that know and respect the breed and want to help keep it alive.
