What lines of the APBT are generally "smarter"?

Is there even a way to classify a dog's lines as "smarter" or more "intelligent"?

I keep hearing redboy dogs are a little dumb (sorry redboy owners, this is just what i heard). Personally, I think every dog is different, but I would like some input from people who have been around long enough to know what traits seems to be representative of different lines.

I know many members here agree that the RE line are "freak monsters" and not real pitbulls. BUT-having said that, my RE dog is absolutly the most brilliant dog I have ever owned. She had learned to be housebroke at 4 months of age, I could teach her any trick in the book in relativly an hour or so, she was agility trained in 3 classes, obedience trained in 5 classes(i think she enjoyed the agility more!!!) I swear she understands what I talk about with her. She communicates her wants and needs with us so clearly! It is truly unreal.

This may not have to do with the bloodline so to speak, but she is just the most amazing dog I have ever witnesed, and has impressed trainers like crazy!

Then again, she has some very "stupid" behaviors as well, that she just wont change!

I believe it varies from dog to dog. I've heard people say that a lot of rednose lines are rather. . . Dim.

I've also heard that Virgil dogs are rather intelligent.

  5. Is there any real way of knowing?

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

there's actually tests that have been developed to show a dog's ability to think and solve problems...

Whether that makes one dog smarter than another, I dont honestly think so. what is all boils down to is the dogs desire to do something. Some dogs have no desire to do anything but what they were bred to do..like members of the hound group who will sniff a trail all day but you could forget about obedience training with them. Does that make them dumb? Nope. As people saying one breed is more trainable than another, yes..but ease of training doesnt make a dog smart or dumb or more intelligent.

And even if the dog isnt good at problem solving when you want them to doesnt mean they arent good when it comes time to getting out of a fence lol..

Again, people like to put to many human qualities in dogs. Most dogs learn by trial and error.. meaning they are persitant little buggers who when a strong drive urges them, they will do whatever it takes to achieve that

I believe the most important factor is how the breeder breeds. You should do your reaserch before getting any blood line, even dogs within the same blood line may be bread a little different.Like some may be bred more for intelligents, mouth or ability. You should figure out before you get a dog exactly what trates it was bred for.Always ask the breeder what they breed for if they can`t give you an answer you should walk.

Alot of G's Virgil blood dogs are very very smart but still not for beginners as they are very dominant and protective.

I think it goes back to the Colby stuff on his topside.

My Colby dogs are Super smart. Its like they can understand everything you say to them.
I have had other lines of dogs that are dumb as a rock, thier favorite pastime is eating dirt.

The thing with the Colby dogs is with thier smarts, comes intense "animal" prey drive.
These dogs are VERY hard to socialize with other dogs, and virtually impossable with other animals.
    They aren't for everybody.

Lets not forget that the more stimulation an animal is given the more they can fullfill their potential. The brain is like a muscle...

Every dog is different. They all have personalitys. Some are Dopey and some are Calm and collective. It doesnt meen that one is smarter than the other. I would say that I dont think there is a specifically smarter Bloodline. Thats as simple as it gets.

lol Yea, they do much better after their morning pint lol

I have to agree with japangame .. its the individual dog, the stimulation it has received throughout puppyhood, and if the dog just plain wants to do something. Some dogs are better problem solvers than others..

but to say which line is smarter, its not going to happen. Unless you could raise each line, watch each pup grow.. lol.. and then it would determine what one's prespective of smart would be.. if the dog is smart enough to win, Id say thats pretty good imo

    The old lines......j/k

Its all about reaching their potential. The same dog, if raised by two different people, would not grow up the same, temperment, intelligence wise. We have a strong influence on the outcome.

  20. well i have seen the oldtime dogs and the new time dogs and i am here to tell ya no line is smarter than the other it all depends on the dog and how it is raised, there really aint no way to breed for smarts because if that was the case then all the smart people in the world would get together and have kids then we would all be anilated so the whole world could be a race of super genuisies.but most bulldogs are pretty smart compared to most dogs i really aint met one that i would say was to dumb to function,i have met some that took longer to learn something than another but that was it.but thats just what i have seen over the years.
