Has anyone on here bred a dog on their yard naturally and frozen straws from the same stud using the straws several years later? I’ve heard of guys using frozen semen up to 20 years later. I was if there is a noticeable difference in pups from the straw vs natural.

    Always wondered the same.

My only issue is that someone with that much invested in a stud dog 'only has good results'.

If there were someone who paid a stud fee for someone else's dog and then went back years later and used a straw that would be the person to ask.

The person producing the pups could be 'slightly biased'.

I totally agree, and share the same sentiment concerning the situation. I don’t really understand all the intricacies concerning a frozen straw breeding. Do they test potency? Can it get freezer burnt? Older sperm in humans causes all sorts of birth defects. When it’s frozen is it considered “frozen in time” and will be exactly the same when thawed? Can anyone prove it? I’d love to hear it from someone who’s done it, or seen it done first hand.

50% sire and 50% dame good luck getting a bitch older than 10 to take straws. So the question is really a moot point.
The reality is no matter the method of reproduction once conceived the bag of skittles is opened.

I once took semen straws off a 12 year old male I owned.
Put a tease bitch (in season) in front of him, played some Barry White music and then pulled the juice out off him.
The collection was tested under a microscope and his sperm motility was 80%.
After testing, the semen was put into 4 x straws, they were cooled down slowly, then placed in a liquid nitrogen cold tank for storage.
Next day (I think) they thawed out one straw, brought it back to canine body temperature, added sperm extender and placed it back under the microscope.
Post-thaw sperm motility was 50% which (for a 12 year old male) offered a decent chance of producing pups via AI from a young and healthy female.

I think the rest probably come down to accurate progesterone readings on the brood female, skill of the vet and a bit of luck.

But lost 30% overnight!? I’ve got a buddy who has had his boy on ice for like 15 years(pull dog). I’m considering breeding my female with his straws but really don’t want a litter of genetically fucked dogs. In this world your hear all sorts of stories, but rarely see the product. It would only be her second breeding and she’s producing exactly what I’m looking for. Basically I don’t want to waste a good bitch on shit sperm. That’s fellas

Never lost 30% motility overnight but lost 30% post thaw, there's a difference.
Pre-freeze sperm motility was 80% and post thaw was 50%.
Whether the semen straws were brought back up to body temperature next day after freezing, or in 10 years time, I'd still only expect to lose 30% motility on post-thawed semen.

A straw from Dibo on sale would cause a traffic jam. I am sure that there are many good dogs around due to this method of breeding and of course also dogs that are less suitable. Just like normal mating and the puppies obtained from it.

  10. To the ones questioning quality of dogs after a frozen breeding I would just say on top of my head I know of at least 4 breedings that were repeated at least 3 times guess what
