Southeastern Indiana school officials say a police dog brought into a classroom for a demonstration of its drug-sniffing skills bit a sixth-grader in the face.

The girl, whose name was not released, wasn't seriously injured in Monday's attack at Hazelwood Middle School in New Albany. But a school nurse cleaned the girl's wound and she was treated and released from a local hospital.

Dave Rarick is a spokesman for the New Albany-Floyd County school system. He says the dog apparently became "spooked" as the student and classmates were petting the dog.

New Albany police have so far declined to comment on the incident.

Rarick says police dogs have been brought into several of the district's schools over the years for classroom demonstrations but nothing like the attack has ever happened before.

January 31, 2006 (NEW ALBANY, Ind.) - Authorities say a police dog demonstrating its drug-sniffing skills to sixth-graders got scared when students ran to pet it -- causing it to bite a girl in the face.

The student, whose name was not released, wasn't seriously injured in yesterday's attack at Hazelwood Middle School in New Albany. She was treated and released from a local hospital.

Dave Rarick is a spokesman for the New Albany-Floyd County school system in southern Indiana. He says police dogs have given demonstrations at the district's schools over the years but there has never been a problem before. New Albany Police Chief Merle Harl says it wasn't the dog's fault, and the officer handling the dog might get a written reprimand.

Of course it wasn't the dog's fault it latched onto a girl's face....it was all the girl's fault for going to school that day b/c we all know if she hadn't been there none of this would've happened.

dogs that are trained in this manner should never be at the schools,,the dog thinks he is working,,the officer has his uniform on,,the dog probably has his working gear on. when they are working or think they are working they should not be touched,,these dogs do not see any difference between a kid or a criminal

Well, duh of course the dog did no wrong...... It's a police dog, and we all know police whether canine or human can do no wrong. Around here, an off duty police officer got into the middle of two guys fighting outside a bar and got knocked down and was taken to the hospital where he later died. Guess what? Even though he was off duty, the cops and prosecutor are pushing for assault on a police officer charges along with any other charges.

Anyways back to the subject, if it had been any of our dogs it would have been confiscated, quarantined, destroyed as vicious and we'd be charged in the attack.

I AGREE THEY NEED TO DO TO THAT DOG WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO OUR BREED, IF IT WAS A PIT IT WOULD BE PUT TO SLEEP.

I'm with you 100% there. I use to do protection work with Malinois and they are not a 'pet' dog. They are working animals that should definetly not be paraded around in classrooms.

"Of coarse it was the girls fault. The nerve of her... going to school ."

But no u can't put down a POLICE dog cause we all know that they only do good... despite the fact that if it was an APBT police dog, it woulda been shot right then and there...

but anyways, yeah i'll go up to any APBT i see and ask to pet it... i'm scared of malinois' and german shepherds... my friend had a german shepherd that bit her own father... my dogs would never think of doing anything like that

Puregame: I feel ya. I worked alongside Mals while I was in the military. They are real deal livewires & the only person they can be trusted not to bite is their handlers & that's if you have a good Mal!

wisconsindog: What do you mean "shepards suck?" I have had some great Shepherds. One of the best sentry dogs I ever had bar-none was a 10 y/o Shepherd! Like APBTs, GSDs (German Shepherd Dogs) can make great pets so long as you get a quality line from a quality breeder.

And as a side note, most PDs nowadays use Malinois, not GSDs!

I don't see anywhere in this article states what the breed of dog it is. the bottom line of any dog bite story,,it is always human error, stupitdy and misjudgment

Dont forget inherently dangerous . The dogs brain must of finally been pushed up against the skull to long making the dog "turn" on its owner...it just bit a kid for bloodthrist first. Thus, the reason we now need to pass BSL on these "ticking time bombs".

Of course I'm only making a point to prove the double-standard. I do not feel any breed of dog needs to be punished based on one bad dog (hell, I dont even know what the police dog was). All we know about the dog was that it wasnt a APBT....and the only reason we know that is because they didnt print that total BS I sarcastically said before.

I agree with you about asking to pet any pit bull. I would do the same. It's chow chows that I am cautious about. My husband was bitten by one when he was a kid. They can be pretty mean at times.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I agree with that and I know a few trainers that would agree as well. My neighbor trains police dogs and he said Malinois are not that stable and are know for "handler aggression", and he also said he doesn't know why police departments even use them because in his opinion there are better and more stable breeds that can be trained for police work.

lol, I know what you're talking about. I've seen plenty a Mal climb their leash trying to get their handlers!

I don't know about the PDs, but the military uses them b/c Mals are a better return on their investment. Sure, they're crazy in the noodle, but so far as the military figures it, why buy a $5,000 GSD when they can buy a $5,000 Mal & get a dog that can do the same job a GSD does but they're healthier, live longer & can be active longer yet they're smaller, therefore cheaper to house & feed. This may be why PDs are using them as well, but I can't say for sure.

Funny how they give their dog a pass but our dogs would be pts and banned from the city

  18. Welp, that classroom learned a real important lesson that day- never trust a cop, you might get bit. I`ve been bit in the face as a kid (twice- pincher and cocker spaniel lol) but if that happened ton one of my kids, by a cop dog no less, I have no idea how far off the handle Id end up. FTP
