Training

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Billy_bush, Sep 29, 2015.

  1. Billy started his training this past sunday. I was a little apprehensive, as he is young, and there were some impressive looking bulldogs there that day. He managed to latch on to the lip of one of the older dogs there. I almost sh@t myself. Thought that was the end of the little guy. Older dog just planted him on his back, and then let him go. Crisis averted.

Trainer is very impressed with Billy. Says he is extremely confident, and show alot of drive for such a young pup. He even did the river crossings with the older, more advanced dogs. None of the other pups would go anywhere near the water.

It was impressive to see some of those bulldogs hit the training sleeve HARD! I'm hooked. F#ck weight pull, this is where I'll be spending my weekends.

When the trainers were getting the bigger dogs worked up for the bite work, Billy was right there straining at the leash and screaming fit to bust. LOL!

Here are some photos. Just excuse the quality.

Awesome. Absolutely awesome. What seems like a hundred years ago I went to a working weekend for Fila Brasileiros in Georgia. The agitator brought his bulldogs to show different stages and different types of man work. I was impressed with their obedience and drive and his absolute verbal control of the dogs. At the end he said anyone want to put on the sleeve and take a couple bites. Said it will give deep understanding to the power that is on the other end of 'your little baby's wagging tail'.

I thought I would give it a whirl. First was a 160lb, Fila, hard mouth but most of the power was his weight pulling you down for a re-bite. It was awesome.

Then about a 45lb or so pit bull, heavy, heavy Snooty bred. That dog came from about 10-15 yards away, went airborne, and hit that sleeve like a missle. The bite was extraordinary. To feel that thru the sleeve was intense.

The next dog was a 85-90lb American Bulldog. He came from the same distance and I braced my 6'3" 260lb body for the impact. The first thing to hit the ground was my shoulder blades. Knocked me right off my feet. The sleeve is up, he is pouring it to the arm, and I can feel his hot breath on my face.

Never smoked crack, but I got a pretty good understanding of instant addiction. LOL. Keep the board posted. Always great to see people out and about with their dogs. Great job. S

Nice pup, wish I could walk mine in crowds like that and they get alone. I'm sure you had a hand full with him...good luck he just had to make contact. Lol

I have done bite work and tracking with Rotties, dobes, GSD and Dutchies&Mals. if you enjoyed the
Sleeve work, try a full body suit or hidden sleeve/leg. Then as you progress, train in "Civil" work. Ohh
so much fun. Stuff like Fake home invasions, car jackings . ect

  5. You're a brave man Slim! They sent me down river with the dude in the suit. Didn't explain anything to me. Just gave me a sleeve and said, follow this guy. I had no idea what to expect. So I was a little nervous. Turns out I was just helping the guy carry his gear. LOL! He told me to hide in the bushes next to him, and not to move or make a sound. Not very comforting words. Hahaha!!!

The first dog they released, was bred by the trainer. Heavy Bullyson breeding. He is very proud of that dog, as well he should be. Very impressive specimen. In both looks and intensity. He crossed 100m (about 300ft) through the river in about 5 or 6 seconds. It looked like he was just skimming the surface of the water. It was so impressive, I forgot to be nervous. He literally flew at the guy the last 20ft. Right then and there, I realised I would be spending my weekends here.

I had great fun, and Billy absolutely loved it. It might not be a true test of their character, but they sure have fun and it brings out a different side to them. One you don't necessarily see in your back yard.

  6. 12 weeks today. When the vet weighed him about 2 weeks back, he was 15 lbs. So I'm guessing he is somewhere around the 20 lbs mark.

Later on I put on a the entire suit. It was as equally as impressive. Targeting a dog to the back of the leg, hamstring area was awesome. They can pull a man right off his feet with no issue. Always impressed with the abilities of a service dog.

Slim would you agree there is a lot of work that can be borrowed from protection work within the gamedogs. Prey work and bite development for instance, not to mention using protection based work in conditioning ? I've noticed in Europe a lot of protection based work in weight pull and sprint training

  14. Awesome videos starlion. Thanks. Billy started going apesh!t when he heard the dogs barking. LOL!

Slim, you're making me actually want to try the suit. I think I need to feel what they are capable of.
