I'm trying to figure out how to word this and be politically correct.

If you have a 19 month old male and a 11 month old female should you keep them separated or can you allow them to be together? Winter is coming and temperatures get nasty here so I plan on having them inside during the extreme temperatures.

Come next spring I will be starting my male (I guess on short walks) , so my question is, will allowing them to be friends affect or hinder my males willingness to start, his performance, his attitude? Will this also affect my female when she's ready?

One friend says they should be kept separated while another says he doesn't see the harm allowing them to interact. I've read about good working dogs that were friendly with other dogs in the yard but did their thing when hunting.

Any opinions and thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think that him being around a female will hinder much about him starting. But don't leave them unattended because even though they are opposite sex doesn't mean they will tolerate each other

Thank you. They definitely wont be unattended, they'll be in crates while at work, I was just wondering if it would affect their mindset in any way towards other working dogs when meeting them for the first time. Much appreciated for the response.

    Good advice Caj...
I would say if you have to ask, you probbly should use as most caution as possible if you do let them interact and have a breaking stick and know how to use it just incase they get into it...
Dogs are individuals and some just wont get along with others, some will untill they turn on and wont tolerate others anymore, some are passive young and change while others seem to be more passive the older they get... But some rare families of dogs are more passive than others on a whole and work well in a pack type situation with you as the alpha...
I personally value these dogs and lines and dont keep animal aggresive dogs and rather a passive bulldog that stays out of trouble, some might think they are curs and I wouldnt know if they are because of this practice alone, but those who think good bulldogs have to be dog aggressive dont understand bulldogs or dogs in general...

Maybe his needs or situation dictates those traits.

Some bulldogs are passive until they aren't anymore...... Some aren't dog aggressive unless the situation dictates it

general advice is to separate them when alone , but its your dog and if you feel confident enough and experienced to take a guess at how they will react when one will get pissed off at the other go and try it .

just a tip, put em in crates in separate rooms, closed doors, and far away as possible. we used to have a working line beagle. little cur took the front of the metal cage and ripped it off it hinges and then tore up the plastic. he then proceeded to smear blood on the walls, crap on the floor, and chase the cat. never again.

In that situation, wouldn't having a dog breed that was bred to be aggressive be, well, wrong for that situation?

Anyways, many similar topics on the forums will tell the OP that DA can be a pretty random occurance in these dogs. Some won't really show signs of aggression until they mature, which can be anywhere from 2-3 years depending on the dog. Others seem to be "triggered" into aggression; one dog growls at them once, suddenly every dog they meet they assume wants to fight. Lastly, some may never show aggression at all, until they get near the [] and some deep instinct ticks in them and they suddenly know what they need to do.

That's just based on other experiences around the forum. Doesn't hurt to be on the side of caution.

There's more to these dogs than just DA.

^^^^^^This But would like to elaborate on the "aren't anymore" If you don't mind? Like, competing for your attention, food or toys, or when their switch turns on when an other dog comes around and they turn on each other.

Thanks for the responses guys. I don't have much experience with the young unstarted dogs. I waited 17 yrs for my first dog, now have two and that's good for now. They've been brought up right and I'm trying to do things by the book. I'm not worried what might happen when they are together under my supervision. My male is 19 months and hasn't turned on yet or at least hasn't had a reason to yet. I was worried that him getting along with the young female might affect him negatively when it's time to turn on next spring.

Shit could be any of those things. They normally get aggressive about all those things mentioned and most hit a point where just seeing another dog will crank them up, but there really isn't a way to tell until it happens

Your 11 month old female will be coming into her second heat soon. It is not good practice to allow such a young dog to fall pregnant so you'll have to keep them separate during her heat. If you have her inside she's going to bleed all over the place for a few weeks and your male is going to be highly aroused during that time so he's going to be impossible so be forewarned.

Thanks, I'll be watching for that. Like I said, winters here get extreme, so I would rather they be inside during that kind of weather. I have no desire to breed at this time, she's a very well bred dog and I have high hopes for her...The Pit Bull Bible Online APBT Database -

Tell the truth, Ive never seen the dog whisper but now a handful of great dogmen that raise there dogs with a different understanding...
One of these men being Indian Sonny whom back in the seventies was known as the dog whisper before that term was sold to your bitch as via media...
Than agian he seen Going Light Barney raised by his ma and pa that way and wasnt programed in the way of raisng cattle, but rather athletes with soul...

Burtons GR CH HANK was the same type of dog and couldnt be beat by some greats, so???
Another fine dog that was a champion down from dirty mary had all Hanks traits, and was a intelligent house the dog that run the yard as an alpha breeding to any female he wanted such as Hank did, but his whole life he lived this way as opposed to Hank retiring as the old grandcahmpion that way... Needless to say
this natural breeding selection produced some greats from both Hank and this modern day champion...

EDGAR I hope you were born after 1986 and please, speak on something you know and not what you see and dont understand, with real bulldogs this type of raising of dogs is for those that cant handle it... I will share that there is a different way and...
Im not saying that this way is for everyone but the harding of these animals just makes them dumber and DOESNT MAKE THEM GAMER!!!
If you dont think theres as spiritual thing between dog and man, you will never fully understand the depths of these great bulldogs...

I think breeding aggression out of an apbt is like breeding the bay out of a hound. If you don't want it, get a different sort of a dog. I understand what people are saying about keeping a control on it, that's a given. But if it's not there, you've got a cur

perhaps, but doubtful. the dog will sense when they need to be in the correct "mindset". and agreed, when not around to supervise, error on the side of caution and keep them separated.

We have all at some point and time wanted or even let them run together and play. Do to the fact we care about them and realize the ancestry of the breed we soon come to our senses. If I were you i would watch them very closely ,it only takes a stare down and my friend you have trouble. My best advice would be to keep them separated with very few touches. I have seen dogs together...and they were not curs..kind of nice but I'm sure at some point they had to be separated. As for supervising, think about when they are running and playing in the yard, they could be to far away once heated, and unless you have a commanding voice, they more than likely will ignore you, now you got some explaining to do....
