I see a lot of people on here who talk about having mentors, or teachers, etc. I got to thinking and decided to ask. Anybody here who might want to take me under their wing? Not for anything huge just someone to teach me about things like the breed, care, and how-tos. stuff you can't just learn scouting through the net. i'm probably the youngest active member on here, being even younger than kenito. So to be frank I am greener than grass. So i'm just asking, anyone who has experience, if they could do like pm chats to teach me a little something. I would have asked my working dog relatives, but they have recently passed (R.I.P). But, I came here to learn and I find jumping to conclusions about this breed without knowing anything will never end well. That's why i'd like maybe a few pointers.

you dont need pm chats as thier is an open forum that can answer your questions as they have...
your best bet is finding people whoms post you like and try and pm them questions or going to local dog shows and seeking out like minded peole to learn from...
But first read every stratton book and anyother one about gamedogs you can get your hands on, the complete gamedog might answer alot of questions for you...

good luck as mentors come with time and good judgement...
plus it never hurts to be yard boy and put in work to get years of knowledge in a shorter time from an experienced dogman...

Agree with EP. Ask away. You will get more opinions that way, more options to chose from with your own dogs.

I would recommend California Jack's Pit Bull Bible for most anyone. The guy gets a lot of crap but the book itself is well worth the money. As advertised the savings in the medicinal section will pay for the book in a year, even less.

Most people's beef with the book is that there are no credits or no "so and so taught me this", for whatever reason there is a disconnect with that.

Lots of good information in the book and then again there is a lot of good information on here. Best of luck. S

I'm a youngster too just learning about things, definitely agree with Elias' advice. My own advice would be to not outright ask someone to be you're mentor, just ask questions. Show them that you're genuinely interested in learning. Talk about the stuff you've read, show that you're actually invested in this and not just someone who looks at game dogs as a passing hobby. I haven't PMed anyone on here yet, but I have started calling some of the more public breeders and asking them questions. A good breeder will be interested in helping you, not pushing you to buy pups. The formation of a mentorship will come naturally after that.

I wish I knew someone out here to help them on their yard. Hands-on knowledge is the pretty much the best way to learn--if you get that opportunity to be a yard boy, definitely take it!

Get a good mutt puppy. Start with DIY nutrition, vaccines, worming/parasite treatment and prevention, preventative and after health care etc... after a year start conditioning him. The dog can and will teach you things no book, forum or person can... ever.

To an extent I agree. But this is where I differ:

I was lucky enough to have a mentor. He was a guy who did dogs in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Top notch conditioner. The break I got was not making the mistakes most new guys make. I didn't buy the wrong dogs. I didn't mess up a couple-three good dogs learning from my mistakes. I didn't jump right into breeding dogs who were not the two dogs to be bred. I did not over work dogs waiting for the dog to tell me what I did not know I was suppose to be seeing.

So I agree a dog will tell you what is needed, but the dog can't tell you what to look for in order to know what to do if you have no idea what is going on.

Basically, you have to know what to look for before you know what you are looking at. S

Hell finding one is person is hard if you don't have an in lol. I basically learn from everyone and anyone I can. Read everything you can, watch any information you can (YouTube has old interviews/keeps/yard vids and the like), and never be afraid to ask. I've asked some stupid questions and you'll get the occasional asshole remarks but someone will take the time and try to help ya. Like tdk once told me "we're all in the same boat" some just have paddled longer than others.

Find someone you trust/believe and send em a message. I got lucky and was raised in a family where my uncles and grandparents all had histories breeding and training stock dogs and hunting dogs so they were my mentors as a kid. When I got older I just started asking people I admired the odd question. Funny thing is, when people like that see your interest and desire to learn (so long as you back it up by taking good advice on board) they often end up including you more and making an effort to teach you

All good post and worthy advise...
facecrack and pedsonline are great places for people to share any illegal activities that might have gone unnoticed otherwise...
The same huge search engine looks for keywords on those sites aswell as google, youtube and yes this site, not just the dogfighters but the drugdealers, molestors and murders... some they should leave alone and spend more effort catching the others...
The best bet is to not do anything that will get you in trouble, but if you do do anything illegal its probably good to do your dirt by your lonely and tell no one...
If you want to ask old timers questions on these sites and they feel alright answering them, thats on them...

truth be told I went through it the hard way but it made me a better person...

1.send alot of money to ironline for alot of well bred pups...
2.then fill out back ground check to see if your ready to be a ofrn prospect and pay more dues and maybe ruffle a few feathers fot the ironking...
3.wait countless years as youpay for dogs that are really farmed out ofrn that only mikie can breed and sell or they arent true ironline dogs...
4.Pay more dues and read your back and forth through the ofrn rules and library studying all the time...
5.get more pups to raise a lesser price for the club which is looking up as you feel like you belong because the discount...
6.then comes the clubs testing time in which the prospect does a series of drills such as putting on red lipstick and acting like mikie...
7.once your almost in, you must pay to take the final test in which a your stripped and a potatoe sack is put over your head...
8.if you pass that then you can eat with the king, but never look him in the eye or you will pay...
9.then you can secretly start your own chapter of oold family blue nose to repeat the kings hazing to color horrors...
    10. earn your money and dignity back being the king of the OFBlueN...

Me I dint make it past #1 in my initiation to the club and I recomend skipping all those laughs and start with a colorblind mentor...
