Injectable Wormer

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Bulldogges, Jun 27, 2015.

  1. I've been using Safeguard dewormer for the intestinal parasites, but my dog is a extremely picky eater. I'm having a hard time mixing it with anything and getting him to eat it, I've tried hamburger but I think he picks up on the wormer being in there. I think it might be easier to give him a shot, are there any injectable wormers I could give him? I've also tried the liquid safeguard and trying to shoot it down his throat, but he goes nuts when I try to do that.

    Thanks.

Injectable Ivermectin I give one tenth of a CC to every 10 pounds.

That doesn't kill or work for all worms.

Safeguard (fenbendazole) is a weak drug, that's why you have to give it 3 days in a row. Its best to use Pyrantel and Ivermectin for monthly wormings. Pyrantel is palatable and dogs will eat it if you put it on their food. No need to inject Ivermectin. Thats a waste of needles. Just mix it in the food.

  6. Thanks guys. The reason I've been using fenbendazole instead of pyrantel is because the fenbendazole is suppose to take care of whipworms as well. Should I just maybe rotate pyrantel and fenbendazole?

I have used Nemex 2 in the past and have gotten some pretty good results.

Unless your dog has a confirmed case of whipworm, it's not necessary to use fenbendazole every month. Since this is a weak drug, it is easy for worms to build resistance to it. You should only use it once every six months. Use ivermectin as your monthly wormer for heartworms. You can rotate pyrantel with piperazine for roundworms every other month.

Nemex 2 is a brand name for pyrantel and for that reason you are paying more for the name. This is the best bang for your buck. Pyrantel Pamoate 50mg | Revival Animal Health

  10. Thanks for the reply's. Is it only a certain kind of Ivermectin I can give in shot form? I have the ivermectin sheep drench currently.

  11. After doing some more reading, I've seen where it's not recommended to use the pour on, on dogs. I just need to get the kind I can use in shot form I think. My dog really puts up a fight trying to squirt it down his throat and also picks up on it when mixed in food, so all I know to do is try is giving it in shot form.

You can use this Generic Ivomec 1% Injection | Revival Animal Health

My dogs don't like it either but I mix it with the pyrantel and egg yolks on their food. It seems to do the trick. I used to squirt it into a hot dog and they ate that too. lol.

  13. ok thanks. So, I would just inject 0.1 cc per 10lb of body weight? I gave him his puppy shots myself, I'm assuming I would inject this the same way?

No you give Ivomec by mouth. It can be injected but not for worms.

  15. I thought others in this thread were implying I could inject it for worms? So, the only way I can give it for worms is by mouth? That's what I've been doing previously but my dog goes so nuts when I try to squirt it down his throat, it's hard to get the full dose to him.

I just hole there mouth open with 1 hand and stick the syringe in the back of their throat. Once I get in I hold there mouth shut until I see them swallow.
