So, today me and some co-workers were talking about dogs and one of them says "yeah we just got a pitbull because we need a guard dog". So after he left and my other co-worker says why did you look at home like he was stupid, I explained that human aggression has been bred out of the American pitbull terroirs. So he is either verry ignorent on the breed he just got or got a mut. So my question is what would your guys reaction have been?

One more drop in a world full of misinformation. We're doing well if we're not adding to it ourselves.

Depending on the particular bulldog it could be as good a choice as any, but I'd be willing to bet this co-worker of yours doesn't know much if anything about the dog he got, it's lineage or this breed so I'd venture to say in this particular situation it will turn out as more of a liability or a flop.

I don't know your friend but most folks can't differentiate between a pitbul and a apbt. Also human aggression is not the same as a guarding trait. You can have a guard dog thats perfectly normal around humans in your presence but leave it in your backyard behind the fence and its a different scenaro. Not to give any credit to your friend or to say that there aren't better breeds for this purpose just something to think about.

It will bark when someone come at the door and thats good enough for most people , the real guard breed usually end bitting and i wouldnt want that kind of dog .

I've seen dogs(APBT) that were trained to attack. I mean good working dogs that work. The only problem was that they were nightmares waiting to happen...not good.

He probably bought the dog for the looks. Some Pit bull looks like it will rip anything to shred....hence the stereotype.

Its always tempting to educate people who expose their ignorance of this breed, but more often then not, it is futile, because it's willed ignorance. Most of these people simply don't care. I've seen it time and time again, their eyes either glaze over, or they simply say "I think it will be alright". However these same people who don't care enough about the breed to look into its history, are the same type that turn into absolute moral K9 authorities when it comes time to talk about dogmen, gameness, etc. It would be better if these people were just ignorant to the point of not knowing the breed existed.

just look at it this way a pitbull can be trained to do anything aslong as you dont plan to breed the dog than its fine teachem how to gaurd you place if a dumb owner has an agressive dog than its his mistake but any responsible dog owner will be able to have a people friendly dog or a people agressive dog be CAUSE HE KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE THE DOG , even tho i feel like the apbt shouldnt be used to gaurd because the media is already tryna end its breed you can still teach it to be what you want

    two different types of dogs.
hope your coworker won't be too disappointed when/if his "pit bull fails to "guard".
    should have gotten a rott
and yeah, most people "simply do not care" to be educated, as stated above, but as an APBT owner I feel I owe it to the breed to at least try. when it comes to the breed, ignorance is not bliss. it's what's killing our dogs

True bulldawg, I'm simply talking about picking battles, not giving up.

  17. I feel we have a responsibility to the breed to educate the public so they in turn become a responsible Owner. So I would have figured out how to diplomatically open up the convo to peek his curiosity. Give him a little minor info and he would either research it himself or ask'm ore questions. Even give him the the web address to this forum and tell him to get training Tips from here. Something of that nature. Just sayin but that's me. And if he doesn't care then b-t-h slap him until he does...Lol kidding about the b-slapping! Lol then yoU tried. Although sometimes I think it should be required to take a test to own a dog!! Lol

I wouldn't want an attack trained dog, at least not in this point in my life.
