Truthfully, my friend, I haven't got a fucking clue what I would say to family. They're usually overbearing and express false senses of entitlement even more so than do friends. I have been asked by family and what I told them was that I had other arrangements with these but I'll sure help you find a pet that is suitable for you. I guess it beats "Who the fuck do you think you are?" LMAO I'm not sure how well what I said worked in the tact department, but that's why I say I really haven't a clue how to let family down easy. They can be very pushy.

With friends, I'd say these are all bound by verbal agreement, but maybe later. Later never comes. I already have people I want to have my dogs. and they are a short list. I think we all have friends we wouldn't let have one of these dogs.

All in all, I don't think I really have a fool proof answer. I'm not sure there is one, amigo. LOL

I say no with no explanation. I gave one cousin two chances first time gave him a male & female he did great for a little while till one day male ran away and not long after that the female was stolen fully belly. Second time gave him a nice gyp and went back a month later to give her shots and he brought her to the damn pound. So my answer is no with no type of explanation.

We dealt with this a little bit with the last breeding we did, Pookie's stepdad wanted one, her sister wanted one, her brother, her brothers best friend. We handled each a little differently, depending on how much or how little they knew about our dogs, they were all people fairly close to us, so they knew to varying degrees what our dogs were. Her brother and his best friend knew exactly what they were, and what they were bred for, so it was less of a serious request from them, it was more like a "man, I really want one of these pups Champ" with a subtly implied understanding that they weren't able or ready to care for that caliber of an animal. With her sister, when she said "I want one", we simply just replied "no, you THINK you want one". With her stepdad (and mother), they had dealt with dog aggression with a bbm dog that her sister had, and they inherited when her sister couldn't handle her and didn't have the stability to do so, using that dog as an example we just said " he will most likely end up like her X10 with dog aggression" and explained why the difference, and that was the end of that.

Hahahahaha Jesus AGK! Remember this is a public forum buddy. lol! It kinda sounds like you and a few others posting have the same train of thought that "other people" have about our breed. Are u saying there is no place in a home/pet environment for gamedogs especially with other pets? Because it sounds a lot like that and that sounds a lot like what the "other people" say when they kill confiscated dogs. No place in John Q Publics home. So I know thats not what you truly believe! Right? And if it is what you believe please for the sake of our breed don't voice such an opinion in public. Already to much fuel on that fire as it is! Lmao!!! We all know there are always different circumstances but for the most part let me go ahead and disagree either way. I have given enough dogs away to know not guess on the outcomes. Some of those individuals already had dogs and some didn't but all "seamed" responsible enough to raise an animal. And if they didn't there is the answer right there! End of discussion!
I think we as gamedog owners have a habit of sometimes thinking we are the only ones that can responsibly take care of a "high maintenance" animal. Warranted yes, always true no. The fact is any pitbull can be a product of his environment regardless of breeding. The nurture vs. nature debate. And if the people that wanted a dog from me had healthy pets at home already that was a good indicator on how they would treat the animal they would get from me. And lets not forget about the grown dogs that I didn't have a place in the breeding program anymore. Like it or not several culls off my yard lived out the rest of there long lives in the hands of some family and friends of mine. I have plenty of examples if need be.

I think the theme is discretion, and not to say that anyone less than a serious dogger is capable of rearing a dog of our breed. I try to practice discretion even with people who consider themselves dog men and women. There is nothing wrong with discretion, but there is danger in placing a dog with just anyone......family, friends or otherwise.

The fundamental difference is all in the act of discretion. Discretion is how you discern who might be the better candidates to have one of these dogs. It doesn't state that no one besides a chosen few should ever own one, yet one should be entitled to mete out these things with his or her own dogs. I don't blame them one bit. Their heads are in the right place as far as I'm concerned.

There are people who are in no way dog men or women who qualify. But if one is not breeding their dogs to place in homes, then one is not likely to consider "other" candidates nearly as often. Many of us do consider an ounce of prevention truly worth a pound of cure, and I don't believe someone practicing such discretion to be creating some horrific image for the dogs. Many breeds fall into this same category, also, BTW. Breeders of many types of dogs practice this same discretion, and to me, everything is right with it.

Bru, you also may consider that back then and since you had dogs, public sentiment, propaganda, media brain washing, and more Nazism has become the trend of our society. I know, as I was there then, now, and all points inclusive from then to now. We've had to make adjustments to our priorities and our ways of doing things.

It all depends on each individual family member and how well they understand this breed of dog and how responsible they will be when owning this breed of dog.

Most people or family members want dogs out of IMPULSE because of the cuteness factor..Talk is cheap when it comes to WANTING a pup or dog as everyone thinks its easy to own and care for them and dont see the true responsibilities UNTILL they actually own one. Most owners wont realize this UNTILL a ACCIDENT happens and by then its too late and after wards most just want to give away the dog.

I prefer to tell anyone the truth when owning a game bred apbt. I just tell them this is not the TYPICAL type of dog to have as a pet as these type of dogs takes 100X more responsibility then almost every other breed of dog out there because most of them are EXTREMELY dog/animal aggressive with a very high prey drive.

Brubakers quote>Some of those individuals already had dogs and some didn't but all "seamed" responsible enough to raise an animal. And if they didn't there is the answer right there! End of discussion!

Those that didnt is almost always what draws the UNWANTED attention as those that didnt are the ones that end up with the major accidents, hence why this type of dog should not be in the hands of just anyone.

Although any one can own this type of dog, not everyone deserves to own this powerful breed of dog because with a powerful animal aggressive dog like the apbt comes great responsibility LMAO.

True, true, and true fellas. Times have changed yes. Discretion yes. And no offense to AGK. cheers. His original question was about reason not to give anybody dogs and then it seamed to turn in to why not to give shitty people dogs.:) Its obvious why you don't give dogs to the wrong people and yes I said no to many thru the yrs. Can't tell you how many times I told my own sister no just because I didn't think her finances where in order. But there was and still is plenty of reasons I would say yes again to the right individuals. A few I already stated. But here is some more and again jmo. I lived pitbulls just like most of you still do. I would talk people out of buying "crap" dogs all the time if I could. If my buddy wanted a lab I would give him 10 reasons why not to get a lab and 10 more on why he should get a pit and there ain't a damn thing wrong with a lab. When my grandfather lost his farm dog to old age I made sure he had a replacement that just so happened to be a pit. And the list goes on. And no it didn't always work out with everyone but for the most part it did. I know I'm probably luckier than most but thats the way it went. My point is everyone is so quick to preach about betterment of the breed and defend gamedogs but then in another breath they handicap them and give reasons why only dogmen should breed pitbulls and all pitbulls should be tested and get a little bit of the holier than thou attitude. The same one that we are used to receiving from the pitbull haters out there. So while it wasn't the only reason I gave dogs away I believe it still helped out in a way because every one that was feeding a pitbull from me wasn't feeding a big rednose people biter or some rottwieller that attack everybody or some shit eating chihuahua that pissed everywhere and barked at everyone. Yes I was younger and naive but I figured the more gamebred dogs out there the better. Every pit comes from somewhere and a long time ago all pits were game bred weather they be in a house or a farm or at the feet of a store clerk while he worked. Its the same reason I don't bitch about gamebred peddlers anymore. If you asked me there a big step above bully breeders. Tested or not I wouldn't mind seeing my neighbor walk by with a watered down jeep dog instead of a blue 100lb retarded midget mastiff. I'll add another personal experience before closing. A long time ago I had a litter of weened pups in a large kennel to the back of the property. Some outstanding individuals walked the river to the property in daylight and made off with the whole litter minus the three that I already gave away. One to an in-law in MS, one to my brother, and one to friend in FL. All lived as house dogs without any problems first off. Second I was able to get all 3 back at some point in there lives and make sure that breeding wasn't a total waste. cheers again and I meant no offense to the other breeds mentioned. except the bullies! :)

I didnt take no offense. I dont believe these dogs are not capable of making fine pets in the right hands. Key words being right hands. I dont think the majority of the public can handle or even would want the responsibility it takes to raise one of these high strung mutts. I do like the idea of telling them I could help them find a good dog more suitable for them though. I like that idea and since I know a few folks its something I could actually do for them.

Friends or family I tell them if they want a pet rescue a puppy . They can be returned if it doesnt "work" for there lives. No one wants that to happen with dogs they bred themselves.

If they want a bred hunting dog show them what they do on a hog. See if it changes there mind about being around them. Unless there ready for the dedication and scars it takes to raise them, show people other avenues. Make them understand your life works around the dogs schedule an not the other way around. Explain your kennel schedule and if that works for them 365.

They do make fine pets. But I will In the wrong hands they are a pipe bomb waiting to explode. Most of the time the reason I say no is that most love dogs in the puppy stage, after that reality sets in and usually there will come a time you get a call and are asked to take dog back, and that's best case scenario. Now I have took some older dogs and put with my grandparents and one of my grandmothers brother, but not a young active pup lol

AGK, I agree with your first post. I hate to be rude or an asshole but if you answer a person and explain your reason behind your answer then thats all you need to do. If they dont understand then thats a good reason they dont need one. Thier problem not yours. If you suggest any other dog and something happens with it you'll more than likely still be the asshole. I have people all the time wanting pups and I just tell them point blank I'm not having a litter of pups so they can back out when the time comes to take one. Then I'm obligated to keep the litter for the next 15 years if no one acceptable comes along. It pisses some people off but if thats the way they are I dont want them around. Family, friends or who ever.[IMG]
