    how do they cope the first couple days or weeks, any separation anxiety and excessive barking ?

    from pups i raised 50 percent would be put on chain no problem, other 50 percent you would hear their cry for miles lol. some pups are better in kennel run, till they mature over 1 years old, then to chain.

    I see the chain gives more space argument thrown around a lot. For anyone interested, 10 ft chain = ~78 square feet. 10X10 pen = 100 square feet.
    11 foot 4 inch chain = ~100 square feet

    More important IMO than space is the mental aspect of being on a chain vs kennel.
    Some dogs deteriorate being in a kennel run just for the simple fact that they are being forced to look out from behind something. I've seen this first hand from one of mine and it effected him a lot in many ways. He improved immediately when put on a chain.

    Radius squared times Pi (3.14) will giver you your surface area for the circle.

    A 10ft X 10ft square covers about 1/4 the area of a 10ft chain.

    Radius sq.x 3.1416
    10x10x3.1416=314.16

    10 feet is the diameter. 5 feet would be the radius.
    So, for a 10 foot chain: pi*r^2= 3.1416*25= 78.54sq feet.
    Square footage of a square=length*width. So for a 10X10' pen=100sqfeet

    Also, in the picture above, the radius of the circle is 10", the diameter is 20".

    PS - Who has that many tape measures? lol

    3rd edit, don't drink and gamedog, lol. Back to the math books.

    Incorrect..for a 10 ft chain 10 ft would be the radius..radius is from the center of the circle to any given point on the outside edge of the circle.
