I think that people who have been around these dogs for a while have their own way of doing things and some may agree with my way and some may not..just my 2 cents.

I never used a chain. I use Kennels. So I can't give you solid advice on that. However, if you have the space and money I recommend kennels. Atleast 10x10. Only had one issue in the past. Had a dog that could eat a hole through the fence and would get out and go on a rampage. Had to got Tin planks and fasten around the bottom 2ft of the kennel. Oh, and use a pad lock on the latch. One the dog can flip the latch, and slows down a theif. Just my thoughts on it.

I disagree. 10X10 ft kennel doesn't even give you a third of the space a 10 ft chain would. Sure, you can pack more dogs in a certain area if that's you goal but, IMO, they're a lot more happier on a proper chain spot.

...just remember ya don't need a tank chain for the dog,,,it don't/should'nt weigh a ton..some say it helps neck muscles/etc...and it can, but an over-heavy chain can also cause a-lot of problems....so basicy small dog ..light-to-med weight chain/etc/etc...ya can all-ways change the chain to different weight as ya go...

My dogs go on lead at about 4 to 6 months depending on when needed. I use a steel cable instead of chain. I don't like the weight of the chain pulling on them.

The reason I use kennels is because I don't have many dogs. So I can get them out daily, work them for a hour and put them back. I typically don't use 10x10 kennels. Mine are bigger. But for a pup and starting out until you can afford bigger or build bigger, 10x10 will work. Mine are probably 20x10. I just use spare panels and connect them. Only have two kennels. Two other dogs are in doors. One with me and one stays at my sisters. (Protection) but he's not that good at it unless the intruder has 4 legs, lol.

Even a 20x10 kennel is about 115 sq ft less than a 10 foot chain. I believe, I'm no math major! I don't really recommend kennels for bulldogs, I've two that I use for pregnant bitchs. Any others I've tried putting in kennel have destroyed them

Cajun, you made the point I was going to. That's still only 200 sq ft of kennel space when a 10 ft chain has 314. You're math is good, Cajun lol. Not to mention not as safe, as Cajun said as well.

Now I have seen kennels made of better gauge material that may contain a bulldog.... But at over $500 your looking at maybe 10 good chain setups!

I obviously see a reason to have kennels for certain situations but for a every day method of containing a "bulldog", no way.

When they get too big for the pen, OR...become dangerous to keep together any longer. Usually tends to be between 4 to 6 mo. But that's not some rule. It's a mere guideline. I have both high quality kennels, elevated keeps with all the facilities, A whelping bungalow and other good whelping facilities for when they're needed, and I always have had it this way. But most are on chains as I firmly believe they have much more space and freedom on them.

I never understood the logic that they were happier in a caged atmosphere than they are free, in a large space to meander all they want on a long enough chain set up, large, clean water and all the other proper care agenda. JMO opinion and from my own experiences.

    To each one's own, however.

A quality chain spot, in my opinion, bests a kennel in all areas regarding everyday life/husbandry of these dogs. As others have said anywhere from 4 to 6 months is normally fine.
