A dead game dog is a dead dog. But a if you breed for a hard bite you'll get bitten.

preciate your comments. I prefer game over mouth any day, but im considering breeding my male Oreo heavy rascal top/bottom to my female Raven top rascal/ bottom mostly gator. that's a great combination of both I believe

Gameness is great to have. But, without mouth, all you have is a glorified roll dog.

  4. Mouth can be taken away or neutralized . A good face dog or smart defensive dog will neutralize all that mouth. Game doesn't go No Where . It's there for the duration . Usually kicks in when that mouth gets tired and your keep is blown lol. Then that glorified roll dog comes to the top and stays there

Just saying a hard mouth cur will stay there if he's not getting hurt......I really need decent mouth and a great heart

They say Jeep had a below average mouth but some dogs with a whole lot of Jeep up close were known to have extreme mouth.

I'm pretty much a believer in a the theory that a dog bites hard because it wants to bite hard. Gameness, endurance, speed, etc are what makes sense to breed for. I like how TDK says the one who bites last, bites hardest.

What about ability... adaptability... durability... style.... or intelligence? I guess I'm in the dark as to why people use extremes to illustrate a point. Good dogs aren't one dimensional.... great dogs are can do type sumbitches that don't come along all that often. When they do.... they are something to behold. Mouth vs. Gameness can go either way on any given day and that's just the cold hard truth..... sometimes a hunt ends as quick as it starts... sometimes not.

This is the best quote of all them concerning this topic. So many face sticklers would confuse and frustrate a dog that it would drive them crazy and quit because they couldn't get a clean bite, or their favorite hold. Bite is always great and looks great in the beginning and most will bet on that bite stopping the other dog. But what happens after 20 minutes and the other dog is still there? Thats when gameness and smarts start to kick in. Thats why oldtimers believed if u had a game dog u always had a shot. Look at Lucky Strike and Andre's dogs. A lot of Andre's dogs would stay in hold and the other dog couldn't get their favorite hold and it would frustrate them. Some are gambling on their mouth will stop the other dog before gameness comes into play and others say let us get by that 20 minutes and then we will see. Thats the game.

I've heard something very similar. If you simply have a hard biting dog, all you have is a glorified roll dog. Same for a game dog with no ability.
When the focus of matching left the original purpose, to find the gamer dog, the barnstormers and quick finishers became desired.
So it took a skilled and game dog to withstand the first half hour against the barnstorming powerhouses....dogs that could pace themselves.
Most people forget today that the good OFRN dogs were known for this....the ability to pace and tire another dog, the gameness to endure, and the fire to turn it on at the right time.
I have also heard of dogs that won, even though they were losing the whole match, because they wouldn't quit, no matter what the other dog dished out.
So the hard biting dog gave up.

Earl Tudor once said, "A dog bites hard because it wants to bite hard." Today we know that some bloodlines produce hardbiting dogs at a high percent.
The only question that remains is, can these dogs take what they can dish out?
Thus, we have the saying, "Gameness is the first thing bred for, the last seen."

As long as a dog can bite hard enough to sink its cutters to the gums then it bites hard enough for me. The ability to get to the spots where that will count is more important in my opinion.

    Good piont Dannyb...
Mouth can be neutilized just like gameness...
Its a choice to bite hard just like scratching...
Dannys choice of style leaves no debate about it, it becomes more of a matter of the oppisition showing true gameness and another factor, can you save the game dog that gets hit in those spots???

...gameness was and should all-ways be the no:1, important factor..as for mouth most just needed, enough to get the job done..just a bit over average..some used to say that some would up it a gear when meeting an opponent of hard mouth..so a good balance is ideal ....

One day folks will learn that a game dog can have mouth and that a dog that bites hard can be game.

  19. A lot of good points have been posted and it's really ones own preference. But Mouth can be Given or taken Away from a dog but if he's game he's game . You can do mouth work to help with that bite or say fuck it and sharpen his hardware . You can also take it away by focusing on the wrong aspects in keep. No point to run a 45 minute dog for 2hrs in keep. I would definitely run him but I would put a lot of focus on strength and mouth. If he is in for the long haul and descent mouth some strength and mouth work but I would focus on wind primarily . All that being said you Cannot Give or Take Away Game. It's there or it ain't

I wouldn't worry about adding mouth in a keep or doing bite work..He either has it or he don't and if you have gone this far then I am sure their is more good qualities other than mouth ..
