How comes people talk alot about oldtimers like tudor ect but you don't here much about George armatige apart from a very good book he wrote

 

And I think at the time George was useing pure English pit dogs before they changed the name to staffordshire bull terrier

 

in the book he wrote ... he stated the battle wil be always between the honest ones and the tricky one/fake ones .....

Changed the name for kennel clubs shows so really the original dogs are the pits as you know already

 

right in the thirty's last century

 

I won't comment know more about this because it's old news and every body knows about it

 

But I do love a bit of history

 

is that book of his in demand at all?

 

George Armitage's book Thirty Years with Fighting Dogs is a classic that is still being reprinted today. The old original copies from 1935 are collectors items, and so are the old reprints done by Pete Sparks.

The newer reprints are not as well printed and the photos are very dark. But it's still a good book and worth having.

 

The original was a paperback? I think the one I have is an original -- cover is a little tattered and the pages are a little yellowed with age, but it's all intact. It was given to me by a friend many years ago.

 

Rikki Armitage and her husband are still around I believe they still have dogs.

I read it along time ago and remember some good tales he tells of taking days if not weeks on horse cariage to get to a match... even back then you had good honest people and you had your bottem of the barrels.He talked about one group from the big city(NY) always leaving with the loot whether they won or not... Well worth the read and a true history lesson on how the breed evolved in the united states...
The reason Armatage is not as famous as Tudor is because he wrote a book about his travels which tells History...
Tudor probably trippled that in his first thiry years around the same time and then double that for longevity...
John Colby tops as breeder with his DIME dog being the fruit of his labor to carry his work to modern time...
Earl Tudor was all action and no better way to get brood stock,DIBO being his signature on todays competitors...
Maurice Carver was said to use witch craft to waken John and Earls spirits to fuse with his indelable BLACK WIDOW...
George Armatage recorded thirty years of true APBT History and should be praised for a great piece of Americana...
Its hard to put Armitage in Tudors class because Tudors classroom only sits three...
And perhaps his work, time wise is so far removed from todays actions to be noticed in peds or so on...

 

The Jesse James gang bit in it...so much history ..absolutely. The common folk don't known things like that. Although most of the forefathers contributed different versions of the same thing..I try to not put anyone in any class.if you choose to study under just one group..you are more apt to become blind on what the other is bringing in.

The e version is not like the real thing..in your hand....but it serves its purpose...

These two men were unlike John Colby who bred dogs for others...
And Earl Tudor whom bred what he utilized...

Well NY is NY nomatter where they are and George won the match but still lost the bet...
He sued a Lawyer that was to be hold the purse and didnt pay up...
AND MOTHER FUC#ING WON!!!( $1000 to boot which was like one million ironline dollars these days)...
The good old days are long gone, but documented by the Hathi Trust library downloaded by Cornell University..
Pure Americana at its best in which the best breed was born...
