John P. Colby's (Primo)

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by BWcolby.Line, Oct 9, 2013.

  1. Is there better looking specimen of what this breed is supposed to be. Primo was the base line, the very beginning of recognition for this breed. Personally, I don't think there is a dog today that could better depict the ultimate look, and characteristics of the pitbull breed.

Has anyone had experience with proper line breeding? How close can you breed your dogs to each others kin, and it not produce bad genetics? Could you start a line with two dogs(male & female), and out of that producing litter introduce a stud which you thought best suits your preference of genetics. Then, line breed indirect kin. Uncles, Grandfathers, or the latter and produce a pure line of genetic traits? I know there must be a lot of older fellas out there that have experience with this sort of thing.

"produce a pure line of genetic traits" get that out of your train of thought A.S.A.P. when you breed dogs the good/bad genes will allways be in there somewhere. Its up to the man behind the dog to be able to breed around them as best they can.

How close can you breed? Thats up to how much time and money you want to burn. Dogs will change from yard to yard even littermates in diffrent hands. the best thing we can do is breed how we see fit and hope for the best.

If you start with usable dogs and have common sense with your breedings. You have a good chance of getting usable stock down the road.

  3. So what would you suggest, if Ive started with a good line of Colby and simply want to do my part in keeping the line strong. I'm well prepared to invest time, I assumed line breeding would be the cheaper route. What other expenses should I prepare for? The big question I'm asking is, to what point would close line breeding start to effect temperament negatively? Also, can you breed out the characteristics one would recognize as a flaw? Or in other-words breed the characteristics you want in to the dogs, such as hunt drive. I suppose the majority of the temperament, is like you said " up to the man behind the dog". I've heard close line breeding can produce... a mentally unstable dog, if you will. I'm sure there's a fine line. My breeding experience has been limited to rodeo livestock, where mentally unstable is what your looking for.

I could send you to a couple folks to talk to about breeding. Have you been in these dogs long?
are you willing to post a pedigree of your dog here, or private?

  5. I would appreciate that. I've had bulldogs for the majority of my life, but I got my female about a year and a half ago. Her sire was registered Colby so I'm sure I could dig up his. As for her dam, not so much. She was a beautiful bitch, unregistered and don't know much about what shes from. She was a red nose, about 55 lbs, about 19 in at the shoulder. From what I understand she was a catch dog in part, never got to see her hunt. I got my female out of her third litter.

your going to do what you want. IMO dont breed that dog we all want to breed our shit at some point. This aint the point for you. you dont know the history behind your dogs now and thats the foundation for everything else.

I hope this is just talk on your part right now. you need to start going to shows and meet folks that have what you want.

I'm with Ben on this ...IMO don't breed her...spay her and keep her...Go to events, call breeders ...most conformation, weight pull and hunting dogmen will talk your ear off on their and others dogs....see dog's with your own eyes that you like...get the registration papers or find a good family of dogs you know the history behind...when you think you know the history keep researching....point is a breeder is supposed to only breed to produce better than the parents were and so on...whether it be in conformation, hunting, weightpull or whatever....most dogmen shun those that produce only for show..but IMO as long as you use the pups and breed for you...and what ever it is your into with your dogs..and you make them better than the last generation in that particular event...best of luck..I live in NEW ENGLAND COLBY COUNTRY...

I agree with BB..Just because you love the dog doesnt make it worthy of breeding.Do some more studying and talking to good breeders and then make your mind up.jmo

The very beginning for the recognition of AmStaffs, the AKC would serve their breed tremendously if they decided to follow what they built that breed upon. The (Pit) Bull Dog however had been here already with a standard based on function and a name that was earned.

Don't breed that dog!! Learn about the breed first

There's too damn many bulldogs in the shelters already, if anything we all should do less breeding! Everyday more and more Bulldogs are winding up in the hands of the incompetent, no need to add to the problem.

Am-staffs are essentially a show breed. Primo was a dog chosen off Colby's yard, I think, by his wife, as one to represent the standard. That was some 70+ years ago. A long time ago. If you're not breeding for show then I wouldn't care too much about looks.
