He was definitely one of the better breeders, and an interesting guy to say the least. I'd count him as one of the greats where this line is concerned.
There are others like him who will never get the credit they deserve in part because they never sought it.

He sometimes looked at dogs really hard... too hard. But stated that he didn't want to know how game a dog was. The funny thing is the ones I had from his stuff, and down from it were. He was respected by EVERY old timer I ever knew, even if they didn't publicly admit it, especially the active ones. And I believe that he bred some dogs that got "incorporated" into other Eli programs. Some he got credit for and I suspect there are some that he didn't.

He believed that from this inbred family of mostly black dogs that if an when a red one came along that it would be the one to go to. If I had to list the best breeders of this line of dogs on one hand he'd surely make the list.

Me and a buddy owned this dog and then hooked him with a daughter of SixBits and out of the half of the litter we had all 4 were good dogs, 2 were almost as talented as the Eli stock I already had but none had the amount of brains I was used to getting. And yes they were some loud and nutty dogs. I saw a few more in shows back then. To me on average they were like black versions of Yellow John dogs. Well put together, straight forward, aggressive, and just had a "not much going on upstairs" look about them. Not always true, but seemed to appear that way more times than not. Jmo

Bru you got any more stuff off that Bread dog? Wouldn't mind seeing him with some more cowboy stuff.
    Definitely a good looking dog.

No that was close to 20yrs ago now and I was all but out of the game when that litter was of age. I gave everything that I didn't breed up to my partner and some yrs later he fell ill and sold everything to help with medical bills. After he recovered he said he could not track anything down for himself so he started over. Majority of my old stock was midnight cowboy crosses. I would say imo the smarter of the Eli strains but at the same time I always loved the smart ones so those are the individual I bred and or purchased so my opinion could be biased. But most eli strains, especially the Bullyson branch is probably bred for ability first by more dogmen than not.

I don't think that MR Clemmons or JD Elliott ever got the credit they deserved. Turned out some great ones from small yards. Their percentages were spectacular.

...agree with dwd...X 2......there is also a lot off small breeders/yards that were a very important ingrediant in many dogs off today....might make a new thread..?

Most of y'all know I like mine :)

Ch Onyx was a serious bitch and anyone that knows her knows but will most likely not say a word...thank you.

I do prefer heavier Maverick/Toby influence. They all work well together, but in the words of Fat Bill, "it all depend on who bred them and why"...and there is a shit ton of truth to that!

To answer your question about the nerves...I've seen both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. Just depends on the individual dogs and the parents.

To answer your question about the intellegence....I've seen both ends of the spectrum and everything in between...lol

I think the one consistant thing they have is most are black lol

I've only personally seen one dog that came directly from his yard and she was as game as the night is long and talk about a vice grip for a mouth piece. Every time she closed her mouth, whatever she was closing it on looked like hamburger meat and would swell up immediatly. Even after the one getting looked at with her went into her mouth piece and started popping out cutters one by one, ( lmao, I had 2 of them fly out and almost hit me during this) she still did major damage with every bite. Came in with 4 cutters and left with half of one and still was bringing it...... Probably one of the hardest biting mutts I've seen to this day. When everything was said and done, mine looked like a shar-pai....
