Problem with knee

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Croatia PIT, Feb 8, 2013.

  1. Hello everyone, im from Croatia and i would be very thankfull if you could help me find the solution for the following problem. My dog ( female pitbull, 25 kg, 4.5 years old) has a knee pain and problems with hips. I've noticed that 15 days ago after I came home from a long walk I took with her. After that, every time she walks, she lays down and puts her right leg up. Few days ago I visited the vet and he diagnosed her with coxarthrosis bilateralis ( I don't know what that means). The doctor then told me that the hips weren't that much of a problem but that the knees were so je prescribed her pills called PFIZER Rimadyl which she has to take 2 times a day for one week. He also said that she will have to go to the surgery if the pills won't help. As i didn't really get full information about her condition, I am asking You to give me your opinion or advice. I'm not sure if I should take her for walks in the following 7 days period in which she will be taking pills or not? Also, if You have any other option for me, You are very welcome to suggest! One more thing; she has been allergic to dog food for the past 8 months thats why she has been eatinh antiallergic dog food called Trovet Hypoallergenic RRD. My question is: does that have something to do with the knees problem?

Your dog has a degenerative joint disease which results in the destruction of the cartilage of the joints. The Rimadyl is only a temporary fix which will take away pain and swelling. I suggest not to take her for long walks anymore. You're going to have to make a decision concerning her quality of life. Consult with your vet further about what your options are.

Why would even think about walking a dog that has leg problem at this time? Let the dog rest for a while. I would only take her out to empty out. I would also crate her. Good luck

As an extra help, omega 3 has an anti-inflammatory effect plus the usual combo of glucosamine, chondroitin, shark cartilage and msm.
Years ago, I do not know if they still do it, for race horses with knee problems, they used to do a procedure by which they would open small holes close to the joint area in the bone. The result was that blood form the bone marrow area would spill in the area and help it regenerate, I guess it had to do with stem cells. They even performed it in humans, skiers, with very good results. I guess today, stem cells taken with other procedures can offer the same result. Expensive but if they quote you for two joint replacements, then everything goes and you have to take decisions.

whenever the vet gives you big words usually means your screwed. if it is "degenerative joint disease" then your shit out of luck. it wouldn't be smart to breed it into your yard. so it's pretty much pointless to keep a lame dog.

do you know that over time everyone will get degenerative disc disease ? it's a part of aging . but your dog is young and humans can get it young to . you can't breed it out . she will just get to where she can't move good . then you make the choise of what you want her life to be . this is what my doctor told me . surgery can help for awhile but you will still have problems like walking jumping running .

Not worth the expense. I would however get a second opinion before u cut your losses.

First and foremost, my english is bad hehehe ..
    Thanks for the explanation..
She has problems with the knee bones and the doctor did not say anything, he just the speed prescribed this drug(I was 5 minutes into his room and he did not even give me any papers) , so I look for someone who has had the same experience with this breed, and these x-ray pictures will help you to help me

I known she would not be able to walk and run as before, but I'm just worried about surgery .. Tomorrow we are going to the other doctor
