A man that plans to have dogs for half a century may go about his process differently than a man that doesn't plan to do that.

I think that someone having dogs and doing a tremendous job with them, treating them well, doing things in a quality and professional manner, being respectful of his or her dogs and of others is a condition whereby time is not of such importance. People of this ilk usually get out for legitimate reasons. Other serious commitments, health, important priorities, family, and yes, unfortunately an educated distrust or disdain for the acts of so many others in these dogs.

On the other hand, someone who "collects" these dogs with the intentions of inflating their ego, crooked acts, back yard money scamming, fraud, cheating and lying, and other unseemly acts often doesn't last long, not because of some sensible choice, but because of having these dogs for all the WRONG reasons. It will catch up to them before they gain any tenure to speak of.

There is a world of difference between the two.

That strikes me as odd because I know of no one who has gone into the dogs not planning on being in them indefinitely. I mean who goes into the dogs intending to spend just a limited time with them and then they're gone? It only seems silly, utterly pointless. No, always it is unforeseen circumstances that separates a dogman from his dogs. Never is it planned that way. Never does a man tell himself he'll keep dogs for five years and five years only. That's why your post seems odd to me. I don't understand that process of thinking.

Absotootly, TD. I want to press you again to start writing that book. Only stick to nonfiction. I don't need the competition in the fiction department. Ha.

LOL. I wouldn't be much competition in fiction, but I have written published poetry. Sounds corny, I know. HAHA

But Maff, aren't most dog books full of fiction? I mean the NON fiction ones. LMAO

I believe that from reading your writings, you seem to write as though you are speaking to others. I find that to be THE MOST enjoyable form of reading. In fiction, you are a more than adept story teller. In "real speak" you give the feel of just sitting and talking dogs with you. You make enjoyable reads either way. My kudos, whatever they may be worth.

You bet they are. I did try hard to avoid that pitfall in my memoir, and I think I did a pretty fair job of it. Even so, I disliked my memoir as much as I've disliked the ones others have written. That's why I took it down and made it unavailable. Just the title says what I thought of it. I titled it Writing One's Memoir Sucks. Oh well, I have a few copies for my sons to hang on to. That's why I wrote the thing anyway, due to my wife's and my sons urgings that I write the thing. I did, however, send the dog parts to the Sporting Dog Journal and the first half of what I sent is appearing there now -- for anyone who's interested, that is.

You'd be surprised.... You meet people with all types of objectives these days. I understand that a lot of people have to leave the dogs for legit reasons, I myself cut all the way down to one dog for about 5 years before I was able to go back up in numbers because of housing location. But as far as someone starting with dogs planning to only be in for a set time, yes I have ran across those type, the type that think they can get a few dogs, breed as many litters as possible in 4-5 years and get rich off selling puppies.... Lmao or so they assume

..nicely put fritz and tdk...there nothing worse than those who look at there charges like tools or part-property...use your eyes+ears,,as these are the best things to use before getting your first dogs..don't be afraid off asking advice off others..people will give you more respect for taken the time to ask and learn...and as tdk said ..don't try running ahead..ya end up running into a wall..like fritz said,,i also have met people who have just one or two dogs over the years..yet there knowledge is second to none..so good teachers can come in different strokes.....allways judge a dogman by the quality off his dogs not quantity ...how good he keeps them, not by how many....food for taught...
