Hey people, does anyone know how much protein, fibre etc does a dog need in a keep? Or what quantity do you need to feed for each food? Any help will be appreciated...

a ball park calculation is 2% of the body weight. and of that 2% use 60% meats/fats and 40% veggie mix of some sort. This is a base line and must be adjusted to fit each dog, most definately not carved in stone. My percentages are closer to 50% fat, 30% protein and 20% veggie mix. Some days all they get is a few chicken backs. Some days they get a couple leg quarters. This time of year they get deer shoulders/ribs etc.etc.. Lots of twice cooked greases with greens mixed it. It goes back and forth. Over time it balances out but I do not sit down and do a balance sheet, or a weight scale check every day. Some days it is kibble. Mostly because I work 12 hour rotating shifts and I do not have the time to do RAW on certain rotations. Every dog is different so none of my dogs are fed exactly the same. US1

If you're working a dog in a keep, you should already have your feed laid out in regards to what you're going to feed. Your percentages will fluctuate depending on how hard your dog works or doesn't work. I would never feed any deer meat in a keep as it's too lean and not enough fat.

If you're feeding a raw diet, there simply isn't any excuse to throw in kibble during a keep. While yes, each dog is different, the basic feed is the same for every dog if you want a healthy and ready animal.

Nutrition is a lot more than a % of this or a % of that. While vegetables are fine in a keep, they don't make up enough carbs to power a dog as needed. Can dogs get by on lower carbs? Sure. But they need more than vegetables. Then you have to calculate when to feed after the work. Some supplements need to be given ASAP for proper uptake.

If you're going to feed a kibble food, you will need to add fat to the kibble to get the dog up and running like you need. The fat supplementation should be started at LEAST 4-6 weeks before you begin a keep so the body adjusts itself to using fat as the primary energy source.

So much more about nutrition to touch on............

Its not about how much total bc it will vary from dog to dog depending on how hard they are working. Its about the correct ratio of fat protein and carbs. Its a % game

  15. First you have to specify what type of dog do you have and in what area do you live. The breeding depends a lot on these two factors.
