So my dog decided to kill yet another cat about 5 days ago, after she was done i checked her as usuall for puncture wounds or deep scratches, from what i saw i she had the usual light scratches around the face , nothing serious, washed her face with water/soap , forgot about it, well about 3 days later i noticed a lump by her upper lip, looked like the cat bit her there as it was a small pucture wound, it was healing on its own so i left it alone, well 2 days after that i noticed she also had a puncture wound in her lower lip, right by the side of her left fang teeth, this one looked a lil worse it had white skin on the inside and aruound it , is this deaad flesh?, anyways today i looked at it and since the puncture wound went right true her lower lip it made a small pea size donut hole, you can see her teeth right thru the hole, my guess is that it got that big to begin with because it got infected, but you dont see the white flesh around it anymore , its just a pea size hole , again the her fang went right thru her lip , she is eating fine and drinking plenty of water, if it was a puncture wound that didnt go right thru i would of probably get some amox but ill wait to see what happens, if the hole gets bigger i will get the anti biotic. Any of you dealt with a similar situation, how did you deal with it . Thank you.

Just keep it clean. Should be OK. Mouth wounds tend to heal pretty well on there own.

after ANY contact it is always a good idea to give an injection of penicillin G. that will usually stop infection from ever being able to form.

Yes, i noticed this too, mouth wounds normally heal up on their own, the only thing in this situation, what happened was that i cought the wound about 5-6 days after the incident happened, normally when i see that the wound is serious i always use amox immediatly and has always worked well for me, but in this case it looks like it got infected and and the infection is passing as 2 days ago it had some white dead flesh inside of the wound, today its just a lil pea size hole, you can actually see thru it in/out , the only thing that concerns me a bit , this morning she was a bit antsy wagging her tail back and forth more than the usuall and really wanted attention at all times, i will be checking up on the wound, if it gets bigger amox she gets.

Shit happends man, this 1 time a cleaned up a brindle male in the middle of the night, tought i cleaned everything, only to notice the next morning his other ear had a bigger gap and was worse then i had noticed the night before, somehow i overlooked it.
Lesson to be learned, check your dog twice !! ;)

  6. Anytime you give antibiotics giving one dose is never a good idea. Antibiotics should be given in a full cycle. Giving one dose will help your dog build up a resistance to it.

Boogie is right!! I also recommend giving in cycles.

if giving them 1 dose vs a dose everyday is that not still building a resistance?
ive been dealing with a similiar situation, what IVE been doing is giving 1 (250) Mg pill of mox, twice a day morning n evening. thats along with spraying some vetericyn a few times a day should keep the infection away until it get a chance to heal. ive been doing the mox thing for about 7 days and will continue for the next 3 days, after that just keep it clean.....

  9. No giving cycles is NOT building resistance. UNLESS you're giving antibiotics for every stupid thing under the sun like some people do. Antibiotics should only be used when needed and not on a whim. When you give a full cycle it kills the infection completely. When giving only a single dose it starts killing it off and the body kills the infection the rest of the way. Therefore the bacteria can build resistance to the antibiotic. This is why a doctor always tells you to take ALL your meds when dispensing antibiotics.

No. When you give just one dose chances are you don't fully kill the bacteria and the germs that aren't killed off will mutate into a version that is immune to whatever antibiotic you used. Giving a fully cycle will kill everything dead so there isn't a chance to mutate into a resistant strain because you give enoght antibiotics to fully kill the bacteria and even a bit extra to make sure.

my problem was with the dosage. its 250 mg for dogs between 25-50 lbs, my dog is roughly 60 cw and i wasnt able to split the pill cuz theyre capsules with powder, so i slightly underdosed....fortunately, its working like a charm!

    Beat me to it lol.

No it's not working like a charm. You should give the 2 pills not one. You've got the same issue as I described going on here. The antibiotic is killing off some, but the dogs own immune system is killing off the rest. 500 mg is not too much for a 50lb dog. I give 500mg capsule twice a day to dogs as small as 35lb.

so should i extend my cycle boogie? ur gettin me all worked up again!!! lol ill go for another 5 days and double the dosage......

  15. I would up the dose and just finish your regular cycle and from now on do it right. Doing it wrong once isn't going to kill you, but the more you do it the less effective it will be.

it should be used no less than 7 days. golden rule is 7days full plus 3 more no less. if its a serious injury use it longer.

i think it should be fine without antibiotics, but if i was to treat a skin wound id use keflex or clavamox for my choice. id only use it if it develops into a abscess.
