tie out methods

I came across a read about tie out methods, long story short for the hardware it recommended cold shuts, swivels, 2 collars (standard size and a thinner "back up" one), and and O ring slipped through the collar as well.

I had a hard time coming across cold shuts so I ended up using the threaded screw closed quick clips, put some locktight on the threads. The goal is that the only way the dog can be freed is by removing the collar.

my question is, do you guys think 1 collars is good enough, or should I stick with 2? what other methods are you guys using? specifically anyone with a large yard.

Whatever you feel safe with. I've never had a dog slip their collar. If the collar fits the dog they shouldn't be able to slip out of it. The neck is smaller than the head, dogs who back out of their collars don't have the collar on tight enough. Nothing wrong with using two, it just seems pointless if one of them fits the dog properly.

One good quality collar should do the trick properly fitted

Cold shuts can be obtained at a Tractor Supply store or a local hardware store sometimes.

The neck isn't always smaller than the head. I've used two 1.5" collars at one time but for the most part one good buckle collar does the trick.

No need for a collar...... Just 2 chains. Short chain goes around neck and padlock secures it in place. Then attached to main chain with a study swivel.

If the fucker getting ideas..... Give him a heavier chain around his neck.

Check the yard setup thread in the sticky section here.

Many people I talk to prefer C clamps that are welded shut over lap links. Lap links are featured in the videos below. You could also weld lap links shut.

i hate the way he 's putting his chain below the ground . it's not fun to wake up to a mess or come home to 1 . seen it happen 2 many time . an axle if you don't put it in the ground you can check the hardware everyday .

Loved watching dogs freaking on free wheeling cable runs.......... but easier with an axle and chain.

collars are not chains, chains are not collars.

depends where you live too. i used to have a few dogs on a 200 dog yard in mexico and there was never an issue, but it is a dry environment. they had custom made 3 foot steel rods with the chains welded to them pounded into the dirt. i wouldnt do that any place that it rained a lot though.

Do you mean the chain could disconnect below the surface, but you wouldn't know it until it broke completely? So you prefer the head of the axle sticking out, and the chain can rotate around freely (I think).

I've never figured out the point in using a chain for a collar.

    I agree.

I've seen people put the chain in the ground, but like you I personally like it where I can inspect the links of the chain,it's hard to do if part is below ground.

i know what you mean . but it only take 1 dog to brake loose and ruin a program . i was feeding at a friends house and if i was'nt there it would have been bad . i no 1 guy 15 or more years ago lost 3 ch's in 1 day .moisture is under the ground that why dogs will dig down to cool off . so it's better safe than sorry . it's just me i try to think of all bad things that could happen
