Working on the mid section

Ive had my 3 year old male in a keep for a couple of weeks and he is coming along nicely, but his mid section like his ribs and tuck area between his shoulders and hips seems to be lacking in tone. What's the best exercise to work that area of the body. I do spring pole, mill work and some flirtpole.

Diamond Naturals chicken and rice formula along with two fish oil caps and a raw egg about every other day.

Take more than a couple weeks. If you're working hard keep it up a few more weeks and you'll get there. Most of the ripped up dogs you see do not get worked for two weeks and thrown in show. Your boy looks good keep it up

The dog has a straight stifle which decreases its drivetrain which in turn doesn't enable the dog to get the cut up core that a more proper working dog would show. Have a look at the many pictures here of the most cut looking dogs, the majority have a high stifle that almost always looks like the knee is pointing forward (the leg apears to be bent at all times) The way that the abdominal area is worked to its best advatage is all based on the drive train and build of the dog.

Straight stifle or not, that don't mean shit. I dont think that dog has been handwalked. Have you been handwalking? And, if so, how far? feed him about 25% more of what your feeding, and add handwalking and rub downs, if you already don't.

Yes the straight stifle does mean shit, take away a stable base for torque (and leverage) in the hind end and you reduce resistance by at least 50%.

In post 7 you stated since he has a straight stifle he is unable to get a cut up core. That is just foolish, its like saying a dog with bad feet can't get wind. It's not true, bottom line.

Thanks for all the input. And I handwalk about once a week which I know should be more and it's usually only 30 min walks.

Yah you can't expect much without putting time in. You get what you put in. Hand walking is most important.

we spend alot of time working just not the handwalking but Im gonna try to start working it in more.

NGK, you telling me your first thought was that the dogs stifle was preventing the dogs midsection from getting cut up, and NOT because that person doesn't know how to work one properly? LOL

I have my 5 mile minimum rule. 5 miles walk, everyday, and that's if I'm not preparing for anything specific, in which case it can be double that plus springpole/flirtpole etc...

If your gona do a keep, do it proper, get a structured plan in operation and no slacking from you.

You only get out what you put into these dogs, sometimes not even that but at least you can't be faulted for effort

If you guys want to try and make an imperfect dog perfect go ahead and try, one flaw can make the difference between average and great. In my experience a dog with a straight stifle can be worked but you will never acheive the same results as with a dog with a perfect build. Try swimming the dog it will force the dog to use the muscles being neglected by the lack of strength in the back end.

P.S. Sai, I know you don't much care about structure but yes thats what I said isn't it? No need to ask questions that have already been answered.

I never said they couldn't do anything Mac and if a dog had real bad feet I would question the dogs ability to work long enough to obtain endurance as well. If a sprinter has bum knees I would bet against them, if a tennis player were to be blind I would bet against them, a one armed juggler would suck wouldn't he, lol.

In any competition structure plays a role and if a dog appeared to have a straight stifle which to me means a weak hind end it would limit the dogs ability to push or pull for any length of time hence limiting its workload on its midsection or core. I could have stated the obvious which is what you did, work more, work harder, work longer, walk your dog etc... I figured id cut to the chase and suggest something that many might miss. In the event that I am correct it may help the OP, if I am way off base and wrong then oh well at least I suggested something to consider...

Why suggest anything if you don't know what your talking about? Instead of telling him an alternative way of shaping a hound, you tell him his hound is flawed, and a cut mid section comes from a dog with a stronger backend.

Because the truth is the best route in this (and any) case. If someone were to tell him to increase the workload and his dog came up lame because he was unaware of a potential flaw he would be worse off than where he started asking the question. I can tell you this, if someone were to bring a dog out to hunt with a stifle straight as a ruler I surely would try to double my bet, especially if he was unaware of the flaw.

I think your bothered by my answer because you missed the flaw, hense trying to imply I don't know what im talking about...

This isn't my 1st rodeo Mac, be safe.

I'd say this guy is just trying to get his pet in better shape. So no one cares how many bulls you rode at rodeos or whatever you do in your personal life NGK. The dog is straight and has sway back big deal. The guy wants to get his pet into better shape and he certainly can if he tries.
