I own a great pit bull thats 7 months now and has shown great potential...but I have no papers on him and he's unregistered. Im now doing research on getting a dog with papers and the problem I run into when asking about the great bloodlines of pit bulls is that the usual response is, "It depends what you're looking for" But what is the difference and pros and cons of bloodlines such as Colby, Carver, Eli, and Red Boy or Jeep? How do these lines stack up against each other?

Different lines do tend to throw different traits, to a point...in the end its all a matter of preference. The Colby dogs seem to get used alot for conformation dogs now, although I'm sure that if you find someone active and using this blood, it is very possible to find a good one. Eli dogs tend to be rough and good bite, lots of folks claim that Eli dogs aren't game, but thats like everything else, some are, some aren't. Redboy dogs tend to be some game SOBs and tend to lack in the mouth department, again, not always true as there are exceptions to every rule. Jeep dogs are good if you like wasting money lol I gotta knock this line cause for some reason, hell I don't even know why, I just don't like them that much lol If I was looking for some Jeep blood tho, I think I would look for something heavy Tramp bred as he was a 4xkilla :D

  3. yeah i'm not really a fan of jeep dogs either it just seems to me that crenshaw's gator is doing the same thing tab is doing breeding to everything that has a hole and i think tab and gator have something like 300-400 offspring apiece.it may be closer to 400 and something and getting higher every year.it think someone is trying to keep jeep ahead of frisco on the rom list!

every bloodline has their good and bad you just got to find what you want in a dog and stick with it.

I would like to add another question. I notice that when someone asks a question about bloodlines, it never really gets answered fully. I'm not trying to be rude , but I was wondering. If someone is new to the game and doesn't really know a whole lot about the bloodlines(like myself), then how can we find that information out to see what type of bloodline we would want on our yard or in our home? Can anyone help with that?

read, ask questions and listen. your going to get different answers and opinions from everyone.there is a lot of trial and error with this breed but the final choice is yours. you know what you want in a dog and once you find it you will know. it is a long process that takes dedication but once you have it the wait will be well worth it.

Well put crg8! All we can really tell you is that do alot of research into the different bloodlines. There are good and bad in every line. You have to ask yourself what exactly are you looking for; mouth, wind, wrestling ability but what you want in the end is a game dog. It all depends on what traits you are looking for. Don't rush into anything or be blinded by some kennels.

The problem with asking what bloodlines you should want on your yard is, that its all an opinion. What you need to do is get out there with some good folks and see what they have, see what you like, then see how its bred. If you like what you see, thats gonna be the line you want to run...but to ask what we advise, that answer is simple, we would probably advise you to the same lines we feed...

I get what he's saying, every time someone asks what each line is known for it doesn't get answered fully. I know because when I came on this site I asked the same question and got a few vague answers..........lol But, then I did basically what ya advised him to do, and found a few people willing to sit down and explain the hallmarks of each line. By the way THANK YOU to those that did. So persevere Konnection and you'll find the info. to.

It really depends on what traits you are looking for... there is no righ tor wrong answer. All the game bred bloodlines must be throwing game or they wouldnt (or shouldnt) be being bred consistantly.
It all really depends on the dogman/dogwoman.
I like rocca stonewall dogs... and alligator/hammonds dogs... there are some good redboy/tant's dogs out there too... Some bloodlines tend to be isolated to a certain area, like the machobuck/buck down south. It just depends on what you like... take a look around.. do some research, see what you like....

I completely hear what he means, every time you ask the question it gets answered with "depends on what you are looking for" it almost sounds like nobody knows and thats the easy answer, couldnt somebody just say redboy dogs....known for gameness, Eli lines known for mouth etc.

thats the type of thing everyone wants to know, if you have a general idea of what the lines are known for then it could help you figure out what you want to add. It would help them get a start on where to research. Of course not all lines throw out that trait as a guarantee, its just you take that chance and hope some dogs work out well. But giving a general idea as to what dogs seem to be known for certain traits would help out people out and answer their question. Hell you could make it a sticky so that you wouldnt hear it asked every week by someone else.

    rocksteady I'll drink to that..

the ONLY way to get the dog you want is to breed it.. it could take years,,by using the lines with the traits you like then combining them, raising most of the pups then culling what you dont like and keeping what you do, testing and breeding..

there is no such thing as the perfect dog..and no such dog that throws complete carbon copies of itself evertime. Every breeding a person does is a mystery..you might have an idea of what the pups will come out like but you can never be 100% sure. Yes, some dogs do throw consitancy.

If you're looking fora specific type of dog..your better off to breed it yourself. Like everyone says. Each line has its own pros and cons. the goal is to take those lines, the best you can get, and see if they will combine.

Personally I like McCoy dogs. They may tend to get on the bigger side and throw some straight hock but other than that, we get some pretty good ones and the line crosses excellent with others, getting that hybred vigor while keeping ability, gameness , drive (these dogs have excellent drive..they put into anything they do!! From fetching to hunting to being a family pet..) And lol..can those dogs move, even the big ones!

But again..they aint perfect. Conformation needs a bit of work (game dogs were never bred to look pretty lol) so now the goal is to improve conformation while keeping everything else..

If you want to know what a line is for, GO TO THE SOURCE!!!
(and I mean that in a good way) Ask the breeder and if the breeder isnt around, find a kennel that deals mostly with that line. You may get a bit of exagerating lol, but who knows the lines better than the people that breed them!! most breeders LOVE to talk about their dogs and give you a bit of history. I know that that defeats the purpose here but heck..its better to get things straight from the horses mouth. Too, everyone sees different things in different lines

And theres alot of lines out there that are probably better than the most popular ones..but lol, they all come from the same original dogs or out of those lines.

This board is limited on what lines..it only gives the most well known..while they have stood the test of time mostly, the more well known a line is, the more chance there is for stupid people to ruin it.

You guys are right. I FINALLY got the blood line on both parents of my pup. Problem is, I'm knew to this game and I don't know how to really read the pedigree. I know it seems, bad, but I'm like a nutritionist for dogs. I understand that fine, but I just need a lil help with reading how her bloodlne is put together. I do kinda understand it, but how do I know if she is gator, or eli, or etc. You know what I mean. There are a bunch of names and I see that hammond has a couple of dogs in there along with J carver as well. How do you decypher whether they are scatter bred or are they half this and half that. Can someone help me out with that? I would REALLY appreciate it.

Reading a ped is just like looking at a family tree, the first gen would be the dogs parents, second the grandparents, third great grandparents, etc. etc. etc.

To figure out what line your dog is, you'd have to have some sort of knowledge on where those dogs come from, maybe if you could post the ped on your dog, folks could help you out better and help you fill in some blanks.
