I understand that out takes a lot of work to CH out a dog, but the standard specifically tells us that HA it's a flaw, does the ADBA want to put out the message that it titles unstable dogs? In this day and age in our current climate such a dog shouldn't even be allowed to live, let alone be CH. Hope to God they didn't breed it, last thing this breed needs it's MORE manbiters. Breed a manbiter, get manbiters, and the owners have proven that they won't cul a dog for this egregious fault.

  2. The dog of mine that was shown I my absence is my baby. So much so that he has growled at three judges, Able Santillion, Ed Hinkle (who gave him best in show) and Brad Wickham. The pattern was he only growled at male judges when I was showing him. He sometimes acts like he needs to protect me. I have been advised by several judges that his behavior was in no way aggressive, only protective. I wanted to continue showing him so I removed the one thing that made my dog feel the need to protect, ME.

Ever since that show have let other people shown my dog and he has behaved perfectly. From a young age I worked with him on obedience and socialization. I know my dog well enough to keep him out of situations that make him uncomfortable. If the handlers I have show my dog tell me that he acted scared or nervous in any way I would have pulled him out of the show, cut his nutts, and kept him at home.

People keep or cull their dogs for their own reasons, and I can respect that. The ADBA dog shows are the only window people outside the pit bill world get to look into our world. The view we give them needs to be everything that is great about this breed. All breeds of dogs have their bad apples, but you don't bring the rotten apple to the market for all the world to see.

What about dogs that will nip a bit while excited while playing. I saw a pup go after a football that two people were tossing. He was so fired up to get the ball he jumped up and snapped for it while one guy was holding it. He tore his shirt and broke a the skin, just barely. But I wouldn't say he was trying to bite the dude.

Would you say that's HA or a red flag?

  5. In That kind of situation, it is up to the dog owner to understand the context.

This post wasn't started to say that any dog that bites a human deserves a bullet in its brain.

I wanted to let people know that in a situation where a pit bull is aggressively attacking you with intent to harm, there are things you can do to help minimize the harm inflicted. I know of these skills through first hand experience. I hope that other people can read about my experience and learn something.

If you have a dog that play bites, I would suggest trying to deter that activity through positive and negative reinforcement. If you want more suggestions on how to deter play biting, or other training tips that I have found usefull, I can start another thread.

Yeah it sort of got off topic. If you want to start another thread that would be cool.

    C&L's,

I have to give you respect for the you handled it.

Wish the owner was smart enough to realize what is what.

Rule 1. Always try to stay standing.

    2. Control head by grabbing collar, if dog does not have a collar try and control his head by his ear or upper neck area.

    3. Always protect your face, neck and even legs with your hands, if the dog is going to bite you its better to feed him your outer forearm more towards the elbow part.

Its not the owners decision of what they should do with there dog that just bit you or anyone, its up to the "Dog Bite Law", in your area and how far you want to pursue it. Sad part is that if you do not pursue it , most times nothing will happen, I guess the law cares more about animals then they do humans LOL.

  9. Saiyagin, i agree with your advice.

I don't quite agree 100% with the part about the decision being up to the local area law. Laws are made by people, and some people are very stupid and make stupid laws! I may be a bit out of line with my generation but i still believe in a certain amount of personal responsibility, and less government. If a situation can be handled without 'law' involvement (in certain situations) then i see no need to make a bigger stink than necessary.

In this situation, the dog was properly crated to begin with (newly discovered escape artist!). The owner has taken personal responsibility and has cooperated with me 100%. If this had not been the case, then more action would have been taken on my part. In my personal opinion, it is up to the dogs owner to take the responsibility of preventing any further incidents. But i could be just too young and naive to know better.

Agree 100%, the dog was properly crated and he even pushed the crate against a barrier. The way that dog busted out of that crate, not much you can do about. A few people close to me remember the crate issues I had that weekend. Sometimes shit happens, I am trying some new ones that are suppose to be buuldog proof. We'll see...

actually the crate was missing some hardware, there were only 5 or 6 nuts and thumbscrews holding it together, there are 10 on most crates.

    Ah, didn't know that.

  13. I didn't know that either!!

  14. Dependent on the State many require ER's to report dog bites for you protection and the well being of others IE:Rabies

Even if no medical attention is required, it's important to report the bite because by law, animal bites must be investigated for everyone's protection. Bite investigation does not automatically mean the animal is impounded - it may only be that vaccination and licenses are verified.

Doctors are legally bound to report all dog bites to the authorities for further investigation.

I am a little surprised by your opinion.
I don't care how much time, or traveling the owner has in the dog. A bull dog that would attack a human, "especially when there where obviously many dogs it could of went after", should have all it's points forfeited, and not allowed on the premise of any other adba event. The damn thing should of been put down right there on the spot imo! And I don't care if it's the owners fault or the dogs fault, it is a man eater. POS dog!!!

That dog was not properly crated sorry to say!

That crate was missing every bit of hardware and was held together with twine. That crate (with a known people aggressive dog in it) should never have been in the open much less unattended.

  18. I have no problem with your feeling for THIS dog after taking a look at the ped. Definately a dog some people would love to have on their yard. I do have a problem with folks taking this dog out in public though if it's a man eater. Sooner or later, there's going to be trouble and someone is going to get hurt. Then it's OK because the dog is a champion? I don't think so.

HA is a fault and shouldn't be rewarded or bred. Keep the dog at home.

What do you do if you get attacked and ur alone. I always said I'd try to stay on my feet and walk the dog over to something I could hit it with but I guess it depends on the size of the person and dog if that would work

the very nature of bulldogs makes them dangerous animals, all of them, even the one laying on the couch next to your kid has the potential to maim or kill a human.
the dog I mentioned, Betty was the result of decades of breeding by serious fanciers not to make a nice housepet, but to make an animal that would finish or die trying.
