Very good information. The last sentence really startled my mind and made me think it all the way through.

  3. if you have a really good bitch she is more likely to be kept home for production unless she's just a REAL oustanding hunter. males usually get in more hunts and are known better off the farm so to speak, that may be the only difference, me-I'd love a whole yard full of topflight bitches

i was told by a dogman here in texas that if you want to start your yard off right you need to start with a good female. take her back to a male that is producing and keep more than half your litter yeah let a couple go but keep the rest to start your yard.

im waiting to get a pup at the moment.considering wether i will get a male or female am leaning more towards female as makes a better pet and i have the option latter down the track of getting pups off her or not.i only plan on having 1-2 dogs so maybe 1 of each will be my lot.would be nice to be spoiled for choice tho!

As a breeder I prefer females,I keep every pup in a litter,as I produce 2 litters every 2 years. My males off of these heavy inbred and linebred bitch's that I have, perform better in each genaration then the one before and produce better then the out crossed ones.I breed to the male side also the female side and the female side always gives me better dogs. But to each his or her own why they prefer dog or bitch.I just LOVE FEMALES get along better with them dog or HUMAN.JMO

Females weren't main stream til of recent. Back in years people weren't even testing females let alone showing them. As Ben stated which by the way was one of best posts ever on here, it tells a lot about the kennel. More males means no heat, no litters go when your ready mentality..

that's funny rock n rye . where did you get your information about bitches not being worked ? and bitches not getting tested ? and it you bought dogs then maybe you have more males . but if you bred for yourself you had whatever turned out and it got used .

    Yeah, heard a similar thing.

You need one good bitch that produces very well.

Than you go to 3 different, good studs.
    - A halfbrother of the bitch.
    - 1 stud to outcross from, coming from a different, stable bloodline.
    - Another stud to outcross from, coming drom another bloodline (with other traits you want).

From the first litter you need atleast 1 very good daughter to breed further with.

Then you use your outcross studs back on this daughter (or brothers from these studs) and so on and so on...

After a while you get a very thight family breeding.

    A couple comments:
    1. You should never start out by breeding. Breeding should only be done after you really and truly know what the difference between a good dog and a bad dog is. How can you possibly hope to breed good dogs when you haven't seen, owned, handled and shown many good dogs?
    2. I have to agree with Rock n Rye, most people in the past & present do not do much with their bitches. More often than not bitches are looked at a couple times and bred. Maurice Carver himself said "You can't expect bitches to be game, the are just carrying the genes like game hens."

Oh and BTW, good luck finding that one good bitch that produces really well. Might as well buy a lottery ticket.

And as far as keeping whole litters goes, you increase your odds of getting the best dog off THAT litter, but you decrease your overall odds of having a yard full of good dogs. Chances of that one litter being great are slim to none. A very good dogman who has had his share of CH & ROM's once said "I hate to look out on my dog yard and see 5-6 dogs off the same litter."

Lol your a joke, like I said females past werent really being tested.. My refs of who I am and deal with are legit and they keep it honest.. Y'all might think one way but what you know you know.. Now azzhole I didn't say every last bitch wasn't tested, if I'm not mistaken I think it was Lightner who was one of the pioneers of really testing females all the females.. Not saying it was never done but most of them gyps were just bred. Now I think of it not much has changed.. Folks still aren't checking their gyps and they are just being bred... If you think that is BS, then we see you know nothing and believe when people claim every dog on their yard is dead game and they never lost a show.. Again not saying all but a lot more than people are willing to admit..

Old goat I wasn't saying all or everybody as we both know some of same people so we know there are some. But you can't say that all females were always tested and showed like the males?

Also Old Goat its not buying dogs you get more males, a friend of mines will not keep more than 2 F out a litter he will give them away. HE keeps all his males and gave away 2 all female litters away last year.. If you want more males without buying you just keep the boys..

I hate when people use the EXCEPTION to the rule as the rule. Those were two exceptionally great & exceptionally rare bitches. For every one of them there are literally thousands of other unmatched, untested bitches that are bred. Yes, bitches get tested and matched but nowhere near in the percentages that males do. There are many reasons why this is so. If that simple fact makes you laugh, so be it.

just because a lot of bitches aren't being tested doesn't mean it should be done. they should be checked just as hard as the males. then again everyone one has their own breeding program, there are many untested/matched males AND bitches being bred. whatever makes you happy.

I'm sure if RB knew what Queen was going to turn out to be he would have kept her. My friend does that because that is how he does. Tudor uses to kill female pups, that is what he did. I didnt say I agree or that it should be done I just stated that it happens, I'm appalled some of you are in shock about it.
