Right now I have a chain wrapped around a tree, but soon I will be moving to a place where I cannot chain the dog to a tree. Would it be ok to pour a 1 foot wide, 2 or 3 feet deep hole full of cement, and place the chain in the cement?

Why wouldnt you use an axle? Better setup than around a tree

Using an axle is easier and just as good if done correctly.

If you're stuck on the cement idea, then you can chain a cinder block and bury that. I've never had an axle fail, just watch the collars and swivels, depending on your setup.

id be more worried about the cement being torn out of the ground.. its super easy to do unless you plan on wasting a ton of cash and effort in it.

wouldn't the chain wear near the cement?

  7. hey bro get a hammer drill and anchor bolt a swiveling picking eye. and connect a link to it.

judging by the condition rebar is in when tearing out a driveway or a stretch of sidewalk id be afraid a chain would also be corroded by the concrete

get an axle at the junkyard. cheap and effective

What I do is I dig a hole about two feet deep mix a 40lbs bag of concrete pour it in the hole and place an extra heavy duty eye bolt in the middle just so the eye is above the concrete. Let it set up then attach your swivel using a cold shut instead of lap links then cover it up with dirt. You don't have to worry about the chain getting tangled up.I've done it this way for years with no worries.

believe it or not, wal-mart sells a stake that is orange and is nearly impossible to uproot. If I have to move one, I literally have to pull it out with my truck. It is orange and is great. I have 3 axles in the garage, and those stakes out in the yard for the simple fact that when I pound them into the ground I can bury it completely with no part of it above ground. I have done the same with axles but it takes ten times the work and doesn't do a better job than the stake. If anyone disagrees that's cool, but just try it and I swear you will change your mind.

Ill probably do that, or build a kennel with a concrete bottom. I have fencing that just became available, so most likely will do that instead. At least that way I can lock him in, and dont have to worry as much as someone walking in and getting bit.

I wouldnt trust them, my mom put one in her yard for her dobie and it didnt take it out, but when we went to take it out, i could move it in the ground. If I could make it move a little, my dog would rip it right out.

you two must not know what I am talking about cause I have used them for YEARS with no problems and no mike pieces don't just come off. I have several axles in my garage collecting dust because those stakes are just as good.

both of these are using the stakes, the largest males were 46 and 58 pounds, and were hard on the chains, and never budged them. I don't know if the clowns just aren't using collins axes or what cause mine are buried 3 inches under ground and will most likely be there till I move.

If talking the orange stake's at wallmart. All Ill say is I lost a dog on one because it came up without the piece's and the chain I never trusted. It last awhile but it aint worth it.I got 7 dogs on trailer ties and never had one try to come up and it's not but a couple bucks more.
