sometimes a cur is just a cur. if a dog has never been challenged and won five but on the sixth runs into a dog that puts him behind and quits that dog is a cur, but on the other hand if you have a dog that has one three or four hard battles where they have taken severe damage then it is probably best to retire that dog. the truth is you are the one feeding the dog so it is your decision. factors like conditioning age damage of previous battles can all come into play. i would not say rascal curred in would say he was physically exhausted, but then you have dogs like butcher boy who was treated for heartworms twice was six years olkd facing a three year old dog in his prime and proved without a doubt how game he is. so i guess it depends what you can live with i feel a lot of people have put dogs down that they probably felt were good dogs but were to embarassed and afraid to get made fun of if they kept the dog. i am going to feed what i want and if you dont like it then to bad but at the end of the day if my program is working then that is all that matters. people need to breed what they like and forget about other people.

    Re: famous cur dogs

Everyone has their own definition of what is a cur and what is a game dog. So to even debate the point is useless! You don't need hinsight, all you need is your own 2 eyes! Look at all the ''curs'' in your own pedigrees, or all the ones who quit, BUT WENT ON TO PRODUCE SOME OF THE GAMEST TO EVER LOOK THRU A COLLAR! So yes I would definitely breed to any dog on that list, and the people up here that say they would never BREED to a cur, then what the hell blood are u working with? You wont breed to the ''cur'' dog, but you will run the blood? I don't get that

I can't go with Rascal being a cur. A lot of circumstances there, not sure how old he was but he went on to win 8 after that. Most gr ch never see 8. Few have ever won 8. If that's a cur, then yes I'll feed/breed a cur with no shame.

  5. Re: famous cur dogs

I would rather not have any hindsight myself as I would never knowingly breed to a cur. And if it were my cur well,, can't breed a dead dog can you.
Now had I been there and seen those dogs before they quit then I would also probably breed to any and/or all of them.
Sure there are curs in the peds of our dogs but,, they aren't MY curs lol.

do you not believe in degrees of gameness?

  7. Re: famous cur dogs

I wouldn't call a dog that quits in 2 hours a cur if that's what you mean. There are too many factors to consider when deciding to breed a dog, most have never been taken to the edge, not if they are good at least. You have to find the balance between gameness that is proven and the qualities that make it so you will not need that gameness,,, and that's where the trick is.

I do believe in degrees of gameness.Say you have one dog that has won a few matches but is never in any trouble.Has even won a long match over two hours but the dog he was matched against can't bite through an egg.Does that make him gamer then say a dog that has won a couple of matches but lost(due to being picked up) to a dog that could bite like a gator? Some matches in years ago would go for hours and not much damage was done to either dog. Then some dogs would go less then 30 minutes and it was total destruction.Which is gamer? The owner of the dogs makes that call .

what i do not get is people will test a dog once and claim him game then call a dog that has proven his gameness a few times and i mean really proved it. and quit on there seventh time out and people call them curs. i would be thast many champions have been bred that were curs that were just not pushed far enough.

One thing that people forget to is that cold and cur is also different, cur is a box jumping quitter but then at the same time cold can mean a number of things from a stupid dog to a dog who doesn't have interest in dishing it back but won't jump either. Curs and Cold ones take a individual look at the situation. Yeah you are right, boze on your comment but not many times a dog is going to go 7 times and not meet his or her match in the process.

I didnt read every post but if a dog can scratch and chooses not to then its a cur. Outside of some particular circumstances like going into shock a dog that quits is a cur.
anything else is a game loss and that is oh so different

I disagree. Dogs have quit because of time, pressure, and damage. In order to be game you need to go through a little of all those.

Rascal stopped his first time out and this is the key. Putting to much on a dog when he is not ready is a surefire way to stop them. I think this was the case with rascal. I for one am glad he was in the hands of someone with sense enough not to cull him. It would be totally different if he had stopped his last time out.

Still every one has to agree - a APBT has a desire to love there owner like no other or at least a desire to love and please more then most breeds. How one dog man treats his dogs might be the curse of the cur with that individual dog and owner ,wile another dog man creates such connection a dog would rather die then cur out
