It was the summer of 1989 and I had moved to Queen creek, AZ from Washington state to go to college. My Grandma worked for ASU and offered to house and feed me while I went to college. I still remember pulling up to her house and seeing a 40lb brindle dog. I kinda new what it was from the news, and I excitedly asked her if that was a pit-something, she said Mike (my uncle) could answer all my questions. He lived with her in the basement. He said it was (Buck) a Heinzl bred APBT given to him from a friend (Penya) who had had a small yard of Heinzl bred dogs. My Uncle told me about going over to Howard Heinzl's yard and seeing all these mini-pits running around. My mom had always told me about the BULLDOGS they had growing up in Mississippi. I always assumed they were english bulldogs. It wasn't until my grandma wrote a book called "Pigs and People" In the book is a picture of my great grandma with her APBT that I put two and two together. -But I digress. One late night my uncle and I went catfishn on the salt river. We were in his old pick up with Buck in the back. We were driving 30 mph or so when Buck inexplicably jumped out. Mike yelled and I looked in the rear view mirror to See Buck rolling and rolling and rolling. I thought he would be dead before we had stopped the truck. We got the truck stoped, but there was no sign of Buck. My uncle and I swinging our flash light around, yelling and yelling for Buck. then we had spotted buck. He had a Coyote in his mouth. It was stone dead, and almost his own size. I remember turning to my uncle and saying.... ......What the hell kind of dog is this again. From then I was hooked!

Yes my shelter dog Zena can.She usually gets bit.She is such a dumbass she will run one down then try to play with it.

Where we walk everyday is a old military base bordered by housing and BLM land. The coyotes here are used to people bicyclists hikers and go through the housing areas at dusk supplementing there diet of deer and bunnys with small dogs and cats.

Usually they try and call a dog out and the rest of the pack hides in the bushes and shit cans the dog.my female needs to learn the difference between dogs and coyotes or at least learn to stay by my over wieght male Reno who can`t run them down but some how gets them to come to him. He`s a serial killer.Usually zena will run them down get bit squeak wich drives reno crazy. when they are chaseing her back he flat out murders them.I have only had to staple him once from coyotes.I wish i could say the same for Zena. She has the pray drive just not the kill instinct.

And yes in california it is legal to take coyotes with dogs as long as you have a hunting lic.

You would think I would be proud of Renos coyote killing skillls but Zenas victim skills make our walks a hassle.

nice read mmax,n blzn jon, I hate when they pull that # on us in the field, theyre smart and kno when we are out n kno what we are doin. they beat my catchdogs to a bay on one occasion, weirdest dam thing ,my lead strike dog brought back a piece of a hog mohawk, bout 10 in x 20 in piece, dont know why he brought it back, maybe to say see, I found it, but but,,,typically they leave us alone, but I guess they knew what time it was n were hungry, on several occasions youll have a yote helping bay, youd get there n there he ll be like he was invited,

I live in the country I've seen small coyotes, thin & lanky when you see them it's like whats all the ruckus about. But i did see one that was kinda sizable , I heard we have coyodogs so that might have been one. I'd say you are gonna have to have a very fast APBT to catch one . Of all the PB's Ive had i can only say they are speedy dogs . I once had a border Collie / Pit Bull / and Lab MIX, that dog was fast . I clocked her next to my car at no less then 47 MPH . i have yet to have a dog as fast as her. She used to catch rabbits & birds on the ground and leap to catch birds what a dog she was . she also like to chase cars, witched cause her to loose a front leg. I've seen pictures of rangy APBTs i bet those would do the trick. I think what most people have as a PB though can't catch a
coyote as a general rule .

    -----------------------------------------------
Coyotes found in low deserts and valleys weigh about 20 pounds, less than half of their mountain kin, who can weigh up to 50 pounds. Desert Coyotes are light gray or tan with a black tip on the tail.
Coyotes of high elevations have fur that is darker, thicker and longer; the under parts are nearly white, with some specimens having a white tip on the tail. In the coats of mountain coyotes become long and silky, and trappers hunt them for their fur.
    [IMG]Geography - Range
The ubiquitous coyote is found throughout North America from eastern Alaska to New England and south through Mexico to Panama. It originally ranged primarily in the northwest corner of the US, but it has adapted readily to the changes caused by human occupation and, in the past 200 years, has been steadily extending its range. Sightings now commonly occur in Florida, New England and eastern Canada.

The fuckers are way past ballsy had a buddy with 60+ apbts on the yard. Those yotes tried to come up and snatch some pups,The ar15 he kept next to the bed is all that saved them. And they do get a little bigger up this way. Some packs will have 10+ .

Zena can only run about 35mph in bursts and 30 mph for about a mile.We found this out when she didn`t want to get in the truck so i left while she ran after me.

coyotes around here probably weigh closer to 35 pounds most are red and brown.those are the ones that bait your dog.and there usually has to be at least three before they will attack. The dark grey or almost black are around 40lbs and will just run up on you.No warning no barking.they run in two`s.Zena is 51lbs and Reno 60lbs.They are the ones that bit Zena in the couchy and the only time I had to staple Reno.sorry for the shitty camera phone pics.

first ones a red .second pics a gray or black look by the tree thats him walking up to me and my dogs.third is a red laying down and barking at us.pic four is a deer the coyotes ate.like I said they are not scared of people or dogs. The red ones will follow and harass you. Most of the time they will follow you and try and see how close they can get.Reno the serial killer has radar or something and usually lets me know in enough time to leash Zena.Skunks coons rabbits turkeys and a little badger have been no problem for him.

Not saying it couldnt happen but it would have to be a damn fast dog. It would help the chances alot if there was two or three dogs chasing. They hunt them with greyhounds here where i live and they send out 5 or 6 dogs on a chase.

I think it might depend alot on the terrain I know in Ozarks I could call a yote to within 15-20 yards but in western Neb your lucky to get one within 100 yards. if the yote was close enough at the start of the chase and caught by surprise I think a Bulldog could get him.

I work with a few guys that hunt them in Neb and Wyo with dogs but they use Borzois and follow in trucks to drop off new dogs when the chases get long. I have never been out with them but I know their dogs can haul ass

i've run coyotes with dogs, i have a cur cross apbt (cur as in mtn cur and catahoula of course) that can overtake coyotes over a short distance. usually i run them long distance with my old mountain cur who can't quite keep up with them but will stick to them running by scent and sight for a long time, then send the faster hard hitting cur/apbt. the cross doesnt have the wind for running them long distance. yotes are damn tough when cornered but nothing a good hunting dog can't handle :dogkiss:

The fastest recorded coyote I could find (in my two-minute google search ) was 43mph maintained for 1/4 mile over rough terrain. that's pretty damn fast

He probably means it takes two sighthounds to finish one, any sighthound is fast enough to catch one unless it's old and arthritic lol

thats pretty damn fast.. not tpo mention they turn on a dime pretty damn good. i wonder what some of the fastest apbts run. i wouldnt mind trying to clock my female

  20. After deer season is over this year we plan to call up yote, shoot it in the rear with a .22 and turn a apbt loose. Anyone tried this?
