As I stated before its taking a chance to regardless just because you buy 1000 dog doesnt mean its going to be a great dog you could just as well by a dog for 100 and he be the best dog in the world. Price doesnt make the dog. Your paying for the huge feed bill that they have acumulated from having all the dogs on the yard. Does a 1000 dog guarantee a producer or a performer no. Just because dad was a champ does mean all his kids will be. If the formula was taht simple there would be champs everywhere.

i think we are pretty much saying the same thing just from differing views...not to play on words but the original breeders were competitors...they bred the dogs they showed....then the game developed into 'breeders' buying dogs from showers and living off the names and quests of yesteryear....there is a fine line there....i would think competitors would not sell their very best because they may have to look across at it...breeders would put their best out there because it would be repeat customers and new customers....

agreed....the prices are as simple as economics...it is worth only, and as much, as someone is willing to pay...US1

That is true that is probably the best way to sum things up there is a big differece between a breeder and a competitors. I think there are a lot more breeders now than competitors"real competitors" that is. So lets sum this up competitors compete with there best breeders buy the best they can so that they can make as much as they can so which would you rather be remembered for. A guy that breed, produced and competed and won with some of the best dogs around or the guy that sells the most dogs.

Thats what I am talking about La. representing LOL but seriously thats the way it should be. Go out and come up with your winning formula and be like the Bulls in the 90's and be running the show.

The best Dog on my yard was sold to me because she was untested but bred extremely well. She had been used as a brood dog before. Well now the breeder is trying to buy her back by any means necessary. That won't be happening.:D

Buy a 5yr old brood bitch thats been tested and bred a few times , if she produces good offspring with selected Studs, keep and cull your stock, cheapest way to get started, not getting a bunch of pups waiting 1-2 yrs++ to see what you have, campaign it, and breed, then rasie pups to see if said bitch does produce like you were told or have seen. someone told me you wont make money breedign dogs, you will keep your stock and cover cost the odd time, but not make money.:D

Dogs are more than a hobbie, or a buisness IMO

this is really good advice....especially considering what a lo of these pups are goiing for these days....you could buy an older bitch of lyour preference...pay the stud fee for the best producing male you can afford/find....and you are several steps ahead of the guy who went out and bought a puppy off a grch for $$$$$$$....breed her the second time and 1/2 brother sister the two best and your odds and percentages have increased greatly....basically in 5 years you will be ten years deep....US1

Slim12 & Buck E. Owens, I see the both of your points and your right but breeding to a Grand Champion is almost as expensive as buying a pup if not more if he's got a big name. A brood bitch could cost you a few hundred or thousand if your wanting something that comes from an A+ backround.

you can get CH studs for pup deals off the people you meet over the years, not every stud dogs charge is $2000,mostly the frozen stuff is tho, but its a matter of getting something that will bring you something back or gain more out of the breeding, not just backing it to a CH cause his paper says CH on it,

if you have a good gyp most will want to bred there good hounds to yours, Breedings not for everyone, cause not everyone can feed all that they breed.

theres way more to the costs than that have been mentioned also :D

collars, houses, chains, leashes, feed, once you have over 5 dogs , your wishing for a treadmill. kennels whelping boxes, shots dewormers, milk replacements........once you have 2 or more dogs you should have a good sized vet box after a while, for acidents and hunting emergencys.

it starts as a hobby and becomes a normal way of life after a while, dogs take a lot of time and patients.

you want to make money breed chiwawas, i seen a gurl picking up sweaters at the local pet place when i was getting a muzzle, she payed $2000 for this pup and was buying 4 sweaters for the thing, you want to make money make sweaters and chiwawas;)

if youre thinking about buying a pup from garner here are a few things to keep in mind. ( i just purchased a pup from him in oct.) his yard is IMMACULATE! there wasnt even one pile of shit in any of the 15 or so kennels on his yard. that might not seem like much to you but it shows that his sanitation standards are probably high. rare for someone in the business of breeding dogs these days. when i dealt with him he was helpful and patient with me. and im sure i tested his patience a little. like you, i dont like to spend my money without being certain about something. the dude walked me around his yard, showed me his dogs, answered all the questions i had for him and never once did i feel he was rushing me. while i agree 1000 bucks is a lot of money to spend on a dog, i dont think its too much in this case. if youve got the money and you want a good dog you probably have as good as shot with garner as you do anyone. hope this helps.

and I cant even get the cheap do it your self shots here , so its like $100 a dog + a yr in shots, not $7 like down south, you have to feed raw just to get ahead sometimes, not just cause its better for them! emergeny vet bills (parvo) $3000-10000, depends how many get it, or if you were prpared, could only cost you 400 in supplies kept on hand, or if you ever have to use them , but better to be caught with them then without them, books, suppliments...

just like Dred Lok knls said its just a start....but without the work and time you have no idea what you have i figure, working off here-say and second hand accounts told to you, not an actual hands on experience with the animal at hand. You put in the time and the cost you wont have trouble seeing how the offspring compare to your breeding stock.

but you can also get good hounds off trustworthy folks with no issues to and do well, but i prefer to go the pup route tho personally
