transfer apbt conditioning?

a couple of friends and i are looking at buying into a couple of racing dogs for a bit of fun, and hopefully a bit of extra play money to spend on beer.
now i fully understand that the conditioning regime of a greyhound, compared to a Apbt is very different due to the fact that an Apbt comes off the chain plump and healthy and has a reasonably short time to get up to its peak potential, where a greyhound is constantly worked and will be racing upto twice a week.
as well as that a greyhound wouldnt have any where near the wind of an apbt, as a greyhounds main job is very short and intense, as a Apbt's can be drawn out over hours at a time.

so with the main two differences aside , i am thinking that as with most other sports, in regards too the athlete, different sports use different methods, and mixing methods and trying someone elses aspect, can greatly help an athlete see things from a different perspective, and perform on a better level.
i do not expect everyone to know what is involved in the regular keep of a racing greyhound, but what opinions does everyone have in regards to what parts of a typical Apbt keep, would help if transfered over to racing greyhounds?

the dogs we are thinking about are going to be keept and conditioned/trained by a trainer elswhere , but because i have a bit of experience with canine nutrition[i used to own a dog food store] and apbt conditioning i will still play a big part on keeping an eye on the dogs and their performance level.

not looking for very serious answers just some ideas you all have on what you think could benefit when transfered.

    cheers

My grandfather raced greyhounds for 40 years. He used to just walk them and use a lure machine. Nowadays alot of people use swimming and electrice treadmills, but walking is the main thing. My grandfather used to walk 8 miles every morning.

blackpoison, if your not going to say anything constructive, stick behind your keyboard sodimising your dogs.
we sit at the pub a few nights a week and bet on the dogs over a few beers for a bit of fun, and racing our own is the next step, ie watching our own dogs race. but i guess i dont have to explain it to you any way because your are a nobody.

pit 101, the guys i know all use e-mills and they still use lure machines, and a shitload of walking.
thats all the experience that i realy have besides a little coursing for fun, which is why i asked the question to start off with, an apbt conditioner seems to put alot more effort in getting the dogs up to standard with bike runs , lots of mill work [without electrics] ect ect. now as much as the mills used by bulldog owners may need adjustments with frames ect i think you would get better results muscle wise and power wise on slatmills than any emill. these are the things i am wondering about that could be of aid and transfered over.

we are heading out this week to meet a couple of guys who my father used to own dogs with to see what kinds of conditioning they use. i used to take my house dog at the time to the shop with me as i had a chainspot out the back and my fathers friends would always comment on the structure he had and the muscle definition, this is when my dad gave me the idea to condition a couple of our dogs that he co owned, but it didnt interest me then.

Interesting Junkyard! Myself and a few of my mates have spoken of similar things (not with any real intentions though). But one of my dads old mates had trained a few greyhounds couldn't tell you how they went. I remember he used e-mills and a swim tank if thats what you'd call it. He also used to walk further than I'd like to drive to work on most days. I remember dad saying something about the running cost ie feed, equipment, transport, housing, vitamins, supplements and vet bills etc etc that went into them cost more than his dream bike and car alone. I do love the greyhounds for the athletic dog they are though. But I'd like to keep my cars and bikes. It seems easier just to punt on them unless your made of $$ $$

well if u do it let me know how it goes. i hope u condition more than one dog tho just so we get a better idea how it turned out. i know greyhounds have a very select diet, how does it differ from apbt feed? I dont think many greyhound doggers feed raw but i could be wrong...

Quinny the fellas i live with are both miners and it came up through a few beers and laughs, they have more than enough cash to support it, i will put a small amount in compared to them due to a lesser income, but i will be expected to keep an eye on the dogs and play a part in diet ect, and will be expected to attend all meets when they are not around. i know its a mugs game but if we can have some fun with it it will be worth it. we will see how it goes, and if its any good il send you the names for a punt.

Sounds good mate! I'd love to know how it goes. I didn't want to sound like I was trying to put you off or didn't have the funds or anything, Sorry if it came off like that. When we talk about it its more like dreaming haha. I reckon it'd be more fun having more to do with the dogs conditioning, excercise what not and still have a percentage in the dogs rather than dumping huge dollars down. If it goes ahead let me know, sounds like it could be a heap of fun, and could get you some extra schooner dollars maybe more:)

Quinny, i didnt take it that way at all mate, but we are realising to get them to win we will like this need to cough up some decent coin to get some good blood. this is just going to be a bit of fun at the end of the day but i am going to try to take the same aproach that i would now i know what im looking for in an apbt , i will try to learn what dogs blood is mixing well and what isnt. for now we are going to look at it as a what if, but the lads are being pretty serious about it.

Dream pits; from what i know a greyhounds diet compared to all the apbt people ive known, is more like what we would feed during a keep, but they eat it all the time, and it also depends on the guy behind the dogs and either what he can afford or wheather he thinks its worth it.

i have noticed that the guys that have the dogs that win keep a very steady diet of roo meat and some chicken mince, roo is very lean and full of protein perfect for a working dog and well im sure you know what chicken mince is made of.
they also nearly allways buy the very best food[the winning guys] when it comes to dry , and they also spend quite a big amount on electrolyte drinks to mix with the dogs drinking water during their daily training.
we have been keeping an eye on the people who used to be my best clients and the prgress of the current dogs they have and they are still at the top of their game.
their is a couple of others who are up with and ahead of thefellas i know and as they were not clients we are going to get in contact with them to see what it is they do different, wheather its, keep, food, and blood or a combo of all.

with little knowledge of the whole thing im sure its not going to be as simple as it sounds but maybee i could learn a thing or two and vise versa.

:DId bet lots of mill work and id even try some mild pullin work just to build up the muscles. If u had a pretty driven dog i dont see why a flirt pole wouldnt do some good. Never really messed with greyhound but hey maybe im on to something

Very intersting, as I havnt read the other posts, Id imagine that you could incorparate alot of routines done with the APBT to a greyhound in preparation for the task.Expl, DIET, EXCERCISE, nurture.. I would modify and play it by ear as you would on an APBT, im assuming that certain exercises would be avoided, as there structure seems to be more fraglie than the APBT.. either way Junk, good luck and keep me posted..

this is something that we are not looking at jumping the gun on, i am a couple of weeks into my research and am thinking it may be six months or so before we decide to even jump into it.
the only way it will happen quicker is if the old clients i had who i was pretty close with have some prospects they may allow a buy in for, and then i would say i will hit it head on, with help from some very experienced guys.

    we will see.

I know absolutely nothing about conditioning greyhounds but if I took a guess then I would say the raw food diet would be similiar to the pitbulls. Since they are sprinting, I would think you need to try to work those fast twitch muscles. So a flirt pole and slat mill I think would be in order. I would try to get a good estimated guess at how long a race lasts and condition for maximum stress around that time limit.

I would think that mill work and walking would transfer over to the racing dog, And you would need good nutrition for sure. I think the rub down used on a bulldog would be beneficial as well.

I would also stick with the start em from the bottom and work them up slowly as well. But when you really think about it I think most all of the keep process would transfer over to a racing dog. Reason being is what is the goal of a keep in the first place? To get the dog in top physical form and to build him up to go the distance, I think if you stayed pretty close to a keep with minor tweaks here and there your greyhounds might have an edge over the others.

Obviously your not going to be working the greyhound on the spring pole or flirt pole, But you could substitute that for maybe some lure running and such. I would suggest keeping the core things about the same and just adjust the tools used to suit the dog, But that is just my thinking.

always wanted to try a racing dog programme.....and from what ive seen they put in the miles worth with a greyhound....i suppose theres many ways you can see if your runner is up to par for a bet.....try them out......try a lure set up and time them from point to point....im sure its harder than just walking feck out of a dog.....lol...but for me......a lure is probably the best way to find if your dog has the speed to be put on the track.....and the racer dogs themselves have styles i believe....bumpers,leaders etc....or something like that...id ave thought its high protein diet for them tho.....any1 else know??....
