She has always been a challange...I think due to her breeding (staff x APBT) her drives have always been extreme. She has drive that shadows my Mountain Man bred APBTs. And due to his breeding he has always demonstrated a very stable level of behavior...yup I think it is all in the genes!!!! Her training has been difficult because once in drive she is extremely difficult to control, as testified by several K9 trainers that assisted me in her training. Not sure if you were being facetious but I was being dead serious and I have the Attorneys's invoices to validate my statements.

Back on subject...I think she whines as a sentiment of frustration for sure.

Yeah I believe in all of the scenario's that he whines in, he is telling me that he wants something. Wants to "play," or get on the couch, or go outside and run around, or eat.

My question to the experienced (besides a firm "shut up", which I am not opposed to) is should I take action, or just ignore, or _________ (fill in th e blank)???

Does he have a food drive...(my pit will do anything for food, my staff will doa nything for a ball). When he starts his whining use his drive focused object (lets say food), put him in a sit and wait until he is quiet, then reward with the drive focused object and praise.....do not reward until you have control of him and he is being quiet for you....if this method works, read his body language and before he enters his undesirable state train him to the sit...with the promise of a reward, after a while when you queue the behavior he will just do it. Consistency and repetition! Good luck

i agree 100%....i would never let my a.p.b.t. Off the leash and end up in a fight!!...thats a good way to have your dog taken from you and a big lawsuit....it doesnt matter if your a.p.b.t. Is the nicest dog i the world...its still in their genetics and can be turned on at anytime...jmo

Let's see my girl whines nearly for everything if I am not present so I am told by my other family members, she also whines if I leave her alone in another portion of the room for a good while....this dog is severely attached to me it can become very peeving at times and that whistle cry is what really pushes my nerves!!!! that is probably one major down fall with owning a dog who is so attached for your attention 24/7. When it comes to other dogs she may let out a few cries before she begins growling and barking but usually it just escalates into barking and growling.

if you need it to stop, get a shock collar, they are sold at most regular pet stores, for me nuthin worse than when a young catchdog gets over excited on a hunt and starts up, scares the hogs and there you are just standin in the darn wilderness, this is a proven method

i like shock collars. i used to use one on my boy for when he kept getting out of the fence after prey items. BUT, after a few times he started ignoring it, even on the highest setting. He would just shake it off and keep going. it works on a lot of dogs, but unfortunately does not work with mine. now i've got a $200 shock collar that's collecting dust. :(

this is what I tried with Rokai.
it should work, but hasn't for me. he was just TO hot lol.

first trick is learning the "watch me" command to your dog.

if you spot another dog but yours is already acting like a lunatic, don't even bother, you won't get him out of that state of mind. that's why you got to know until which point he becomes TO excited when seeing another dog.
let's say that point is... 10 feet.
you get a bit further than 10 feet away, dog is looking at the other dog, he should be a bit interested but not about to go nuts. and say "watch me", if the dog looks at you, praise HEAVILY.
then you go a bit closer to the other dog, same thing "watch me" up until you can be at a normal distance of the dog and he can behave himself.

in the long run the dog should see other dogs and think of it as a game.
other dogs = praise. and he should look to you without you even asking when seeing another dog, patiently waiting to get a praise :)

most important thing, when seeing other dogs, DO NOT stress, do NOT make the leash shorter (except of course if you're walking right past a dog! lol no need to let him bite another neither) it will show the dog he has reasons to be tensed up, he will notice something is happening and will react accordingly like be excited as hell etc.

hope this will help some people :)

Mine whines when he's excited, when I'm getting ready to take him for a walk, when the car stops...basically whenever he's concious.

Does anyone know how to correct this?? lol I hate it. If I tell him "enough" he goes into silent cries...like whispers.
