Pearl City Man Accused Of Harming Dog With Surgical Procedure
Man Admits He's Not Licensed Vet

    HONOLULU --
A dog owner is accusing a Pearl City man of botching her dog's ear cropping procedure. She said he must be stopped because he is not a licensed veterinarian.

The dog owner, identified only as Sarah, said she took her 4 month old pit bull "Boss", to the man's house two weeks ago. When she picked up her dog, she said his ears were in bad shape.

"Horrible. They were bleeding. The stitches were super tight onto his ears," said Sarah. "He was just crying in a lot of pain, just crying all the way home. I just looked at him and started crying. I knew something was wrong with him."

Sarah was also disturbed about her dog's nails. "Every one of his nails were clipped and I didn't even ask for that. They were all bleeding," she said.

Sarah also claims Silva did not put her dog to sleep before performing the procedure. "He had like duct tape marks as if he hog-tied him. And around his head, he had patches of hair missing like he just ripped the tape off. I'm wondering why would you have to hog-tie my dog if you put him to sleep?," Sarah said.

Sarah told KITV an employee at the Ewa Beach Pet Depot referred her to Derrick Silva. "Where I was going to go was actually going to be like $300 and she said he could do it for like $150 to $200," she said. Sarah had no idea he was not licensed.

Derrick Silva claims he's been performing procedures on dogs for 20 years because he wants to help pet owners who cannot afford veterinary care. "It breaks my heart to see somebody who needs help and they won't help the person's dog unless they have a credit card," Silva said.

Silva believes Sarah was upset that her dog's nails were bleeding, but he claims she allowed her dog to run on the sidewalk against his advice. Sarah said she never asked Silva to clip her dog's nails. Silva claims he did so as a courtesy because he did not want the dog to scratch the stitches on his ears.

Silva admits he started performing procedures on dogs years ago, after he could not afford a $3000 procedure for his own dog. Silva said he spays and neuters dogs, performs eye surgeries and even clipped the vocal chords of one of his dogs.

The Hawaiian Humane Society says any surgery on animals is illegal unless performed by a licensed vet. It is investigating.

that woman is stupid too i thought past twelve weeks you shouldn't crop ears and you take the dog to the mans house and you dont ask if he was a licenced vet or even to see where his operating room anywho both of them are at fault and the poor pup got the worst of it

  4. Sounds like she tried to go around the rules of cropping and get it done anyways. Also seems that she was more interested in what she wanted and saving money them her dogs wellbeing. She got what she paid for. The guy seems to have a good heart cause vet bills r outrageous but he coulda got his license and just been a cheaper vet legally. Stupid of both of them. Sorry for the pup thoigh he got the raw end of it

ear cropping should only be done by someone who knows what they are doing, normally that is a vet,of course,my late great unlce used to crop his dobermans ears, but he knew what he was doing and his dogs ears looked great, but he knew what he was doing, and that was years ago when people were worth damn and didnt do thing half assed.there is a point which you shouldnt crop a dogs ears and that is ussually around 12 weeks from what abuddy of mine told me,he pays his vet 250.00 and they look great but it has to be done before the stuff in the ears get hard, cant remember the name of it,its on the tip of my tongue but cant remember it.both of those idiots needs to be pimp slapped,,,,wheres my powder??
