  1. So I have read on many forums, not just this one, about people who want to home vet their dogs because they don't want to cough up the cash for vet visits. Now I have absolutely no problems with dealing with minor issues and asking for help when it is something that doesn't appear life threatening, but for the life of me I just don't get it when somebody comes on with something that is OBVIOUSLY an issue for a vet and they want to just continue to doctor the dog at home and get freakin' internet advice because they don't want to PAY.

Take for example the thread up now about the dog bleeding out of it's ass for months! The person states they don't want to spend money on a vet. On another forum I saw somebody who had a new litter of pups and there is puss running out of the tits on the mama. Stupid ass people are telling them to let the pups suck it out! Is this really the kind of stupid information people are willing to follow?

Take your friggin' dogs to the vet people! If the vet you go to is a moron, FIND ANOTHER ONE you can work with and trust!

I mean seriously, how long would you bleed out of your ass before you went to the damn doctor to see what's wrong. IMO if you're too damn cheap to take a dog to the vet every now and then, you're too irresponsible to own any animal! Much less our glorious breed of choice the APBT!

Anybody else have any thoughts on it?

Wow! good to know I am not the only one to feel this way.I keep seeing more & more threads like this.My dog wont eat,he is skiny does not put on weight, sore's on his body. But I dont want to spend the money on taking him to the vet if you cant afford the freakin vet you cant afford the dog plain & simple. As far as I know no one on here is A vet & if they where they would not be on here giving free advice with out looking at the dog.I belive it is unethical.I dont take my dogs to the vet every time they have a runny nose or they veed vacine's or worming's BUT COME ON USE COMMON SENCE PEOPLE.If the dam dog is bleeding out its ass for weeks I think its time to take it to the vet!!!!!

For minor stuff, ok. For the bigger things, go to the vet. If you can't afford it, don't have a dog or sell your flat screen TV for the money. The only one's that end up suffering are the dogs.

If you are not happy with your vet, find another one. I can call my vet anytime if I have questions on anything and someone will always help me.

The internet is not a vet's office.

If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the dog.

This past spring, my senior dog had to have an emergency spleenectomy. He spleen was due to rupture at any moment, it was a change in her behavior that resulted in her visit to the vet. Just three months later, she had some tumors removed. Just when I thought I was in the clear with her, I lost her at 12 years old in November. She died with dignity, and she got the best vet care possible. She ate the best food (Wellness Core), and she lived the best possible life I could give her.

If I need a second opinion, I take my dogs to Cornell.

I believe if you are going to own the dogs, you have the ultimate responsibility to give the the best possible life, they give you their all, isn't that the least you owe them?

IMO, you shouldn't even deal with minor issues unless you know what you are doing won't make matters worse AND have had an experienced person YOU KNOW show you how to do it.

    Well said!

As a matter of fact I know of at least one member who didn't have money to bring his pup to the vet for a life threatening issue. His excuse was that he didn't have an extra $500 sitting around...

And now he's already planning to breed his female dog...

I agree with what you guys are saying to an extent. There is so many variables as to why someone can't take a dog to the vet. For example, maybe he has 1 pet bull and he is making 100,000/year. He loses his job and his unemployment is running out. His dog has something wrong with it and he has a shut off notice for his electric to pay. What do you choose? pay the shut off notice or go to the vet? Then everyone on here calls him a dumb ass and a pathletic loser. Like he doesn't have enough problems. Now he asked for help and someone is calling him names. There is a million examples of this.

I for one will do everything in my power not to take a dog to the vet and if i do. I will have a friend do it. Because every vet around here will snitch you out quick. You don't stand a chance taking your pit to a vet around here. I got a 7 month old pup thats got hits on his legs because he got loose from the wife and hit my other dog in the yard. If I take him to the vet, I'm toast!

For once it would be nice to give someone some sound advice without the insults. How old are we? Do we really need to act this childish?

  8. Well you got one thing right. We are grown adults. Therefore grown adults SHOULD be able to support themselves. If you lose your job, get another one! Don't sit your ass on unemployment and cry you got shut off notices. Get your ass out and take whatever is available. Take 2, 3 or however many jobs it takes to pay the bills. After all, we are adults right? Adults should have their shit together enough to support themselves and whatever animals they have. That's a whole other subject though.

Sorry but I call it like I see it and when I see somebody playing the dumbass part, sorry that makes you a dumbass. If you aren't ADULT enough to hear it, well you prbly aren't ADULT enough to be on the internet telling people your dog is bleeding out of it's ass or puss is coming from it's tits or whatever possible life threatening illness your dog has.

I can be adult with ANYBODY that wants to act like one. To sit and say you aren't going because you don't want to pony up the money ISN'T being very adult though. It's being a tight ass who puts money before the dog plain and simple.

For those who have spoken up and agreed, thank goodness cuz I was also thinking I was the only one there for a while.

Sound advice is great IF the problem can be fixed without a vet. Some issues cannot. What do you do then? If there are no other options other than taking your dog to a vet, what advice can possibly be given?

As far as vets who will snitch, that's disgusting because with their responsibility comes an oath to care for ALL animals the same. I will tell you that my vet does not discriminate. She loves pit bulls the same as she would a chihuahua. If my vet discriminated, I would find another one. They are out there, you just have to look.:) IMO, before even getting one of these dogs, finding a vet that won't discriminate would be on the top of my list.

No I am not refferring to anyone in particular. All, I am saying is who are we to judge. No one knows what kind of situation each individual person is in. It's easy to say go get a fast food job yadda yadda. Even those jobs aren't easy to come by nowadays. I am lucky enough to have 2 full time jobs. Even then, sometimes shit hits the fan and times can be rough. Then there is also the other side of the coin, where the guy takes on to many dogs that he can't take care of blah, blah, blah.

well me personally i have a really good vet who if i needed to have one of my dogs treated and could not afford it at the time would work with me on payments and he has done alot of things for me for free im just really lucky to have such a vet as a responsible adult you should realize things in life happen by accident all the time and should cover your ass one way or another be it with saved up money or just knowing the right people who will do good by you
and i understand times are rough but i wont watch one of my animals sufer and me not do anything about it

If you own A dog wether it is A bulldog or a pomeranian you have to know eventually it will need to go to the vet. Most vet's will work with you on your bill.I had a female who had to have a seesection $1200 took me a year to pay it off but she did not die nore did she suffer. If times get so bad that you have to decide wether to pay the light bill or the vet its time to let the dog's go till times get better.IMO

Boogie I see it daily at work. In the area I live in now is very rural. And many people have been taking care of their animals for years. And some have a clue and some do not. And most of the time, by the time they take the dog to the vet the animal is in such bad shape it ends up costing the owner more and taking more to treat the animal. And the animal is suffering.

Also I see all the time as well on forums. People come on here looking for medical advice. And I also see all the misinformation as well.

I don't see anything wrong with coming to this board for medical advice. But if it's something only a vet can handle then go to the vet. Say if my dog had some type of abnormal *fill in the blank* and I wasn't sure what it was, I would bring it here first to get folks opinion. Just to give me an idea of what next step(s) to take.
I think the sad thing is, some people don't even have health care yet do more for their dog(s) health wise than themselves.

100% agree!and if your talking big money and cant pay on a life threating illness put them down, you cant let them suffer till the die!!!!!!!!!

    Agreed.

Whenever I see people complaining about not having money or not wanting to take the dogs/pups to get checked when there is an obvious major issue, it makes me really feel they don't care about the dogs. I'm sure money is tight for most people especially now a days. I mean would you rather just watch your dog suffer... wouldn't you at least try to get on a payment plan, use a credit card or even if worse came to worse sign over the dog to someone who could actually care for it?

Some would literally pass out if they saw the bills I had from last spring when I had two of mine need emergency surgeries for health issues just two weeks apart from each other.

I certainly didn't have that amount of money saved anywhere, I doubt most people do. I will be paying off the bills on it for years, but they are my dogs, & my responsibility. Part of being an owner unfortunately comes with things like this sometimes, and having to make hard decisions on what is right for the dogs.
