Crosses That Didn't Work Out?

I've read a lot about crosses that everyone loves (jeep/redboy, bolio/boyles, my friend likes bolio/chinaman, etc) but what are some crosses you've experimented with before that didin't work out? If so, what did you find lacking?

my first cross was mayday top redboy bottom got 5 in the litter. One died right away. I kept two and they became manbiters so i cull them and the others went to friends. After that i stop trying to make monster.

Hope I don't sound like a know it all, but the individuals being crossed are more important than which bloodlines are being mixed. I have seen proven crosses fail and first time crosses click, but for me the mix of jeep and Earl jr failed badly.

the only cross i can say that i would never do again is eli/paladin i tried it twice with a very proven paladin male who is a great producer and with 2 separate proven heavy eli bitches and both litters turned out mostly cold dogs

the most successful cross ive ever done thats proven its self for years on my families yard is a midnight cowboy/redboy cross

Yeah an oldtimer told me you almost always need a hot cross to put the fire in them, which would explain why some lines run cold after time. This is the reason for the popularity of the redboy cross with almost any line.

  8. alligator/redboy, zebo/honeybunch(they were bred together and got nothing), jeep/boyles, sorrells/redboy...and many more, but it also depends on which individuals the blood is coming from. Jeep was good with redboy but would his brother Ch Charlie have been as good? Frisco crossed well into many lines and made champions but there were other sons of chinaman that didn't.

any 2 decent lines when crossed will produce some decent stuff, as long as you use the right dogs that click.

  10. ok, does anyone actaully know why redboy crosses work better than other lines, what is it about the redboy line that makes it click........is it because redboy dogs are bred different to other lines out there for example anything down from eli crossed into redboy (colby) will work

In the wrong hands any line can run cold. I haven't seen many pure redboy dogs so I can't speak on them; but the different crosses I have seen show no signs of cooling off soon. I think breeding a tight line over time is the hardest thing to do, unless you are looking for just one trait.

Well I'm not sure if I really understand the question but I'll say this much threw experience.
The only way to know if the dog you feed works is to work it!
You can have a litter of 6 & only 1 turn out & vise /verse. You can have 5 that turn out & one doesn't.
Just because they are bred a certain way guarantees absolutely nothing!
Checking each one guarantees it works not papers.

I have bred a lot of dogs & knew others that bred a lot also, but for those with working dogs the result is always the same. Just put a little wok on them 1st.

CHECK & EACH ONE IN EVERY LITTER!
Just because he looks good in a harness doesn't mean he's going to pull the weight!

You can't just check them 1 time either.
This theory may work for some by just breeding a family but has never worked for me.

For me quality comes from knowing each & every dog worked . Not it's the belly mate of this or the cousin to that& deffinantly based of paper work of dogs that I personally didn't breed each one in.
If it works for you fine , but to me no breeding is a guarantee . I know more about the pups than most will , I've seen one or a few in each generation for @ least 12-16 generations & still need to know the each new one that comes along before I say ok to it.
You owe it to yourself & the breed itself to base working dogs on work & not papers before you breed them. If you really want to call them working dogs.

I would re-look @ how to consider what dogs get bred a little more different if it was me.

the Colby and Redboy did not work... hmmm must need a lil jeep blending in there. I have one that is very much a bulldog. must be the individual dogs behind the breeding....
if any cross does not add something, must be sub par dogs to begin with, simple as that - why breed the dogs if they are not from proven stock...performers .. producers...or both...hell...why not even go to a show and see....

hmmm....i got a new flavor of ice cream, it was vanilla, but i added some other flavors as well....anyone want to try some??

Not always true ..Its just sometimes the cross doesn't work even if the 2 individuals are proven from proven families. It happens.

Nothing is 100%... true..but the blanket question in general was a ploy.
You are correct...that was the hidden agenda in my post.
Like saying..this cross is crap....well...what are the variables involved..besides names..blood...families...heritage...experience...
