I want to start my dog on a raw diet, but im not sure what foods are necessary to feed her, i obviously know meat is part of it, but do i need to supplement it with other foods like vegetables and fruits? I know dogs are carnivores, so im not sure if they really need the extra. I already know im supposed to feed between 2 and 4% of her body weight, just looking for suggestions, because I tried yahoo answers and that got me nowhere. People were telling me that her being 50 pounds was bad, that she was underweight, you can see from my pics shes not underweight. Another stupid person said feeding her raw meat would be bad for her, that I should cook it. Im pretty sure cooking their meat is bad.
Also, why am I being told that pork is bad for dogs? Is it true? If so why?
    Thanks a bunch!!!!

My dogs raw diet consists of ground chicken back, turkey necks, beef, chicken and beef organs, and once or twice a week they'll get a raw mackeral or herring whole. I feed my dogs 3 or 4 times a day depending on if I'm working them that day. For supplements I add omega 3 fish oil, vitamin b12, vitamin e, and a handful of veggies once a day(usually greens or spinach). On the days that I usually work my dogs... they'll get a post workout meal consisting of whey protein, whole banana or apple, and yogurt. And twice a week... I'll throw in a whole raw egg with the shell and all usually in one of there dinners. So my feeding schedule goes like this:

    Workout Schedule
    1. 7-8am- 1/2 pound of raw with omega 3 fish oil
    2. 10am-12pm- workout
    3. 12:30pm- post workout meal
    4. 4-5pm- 1/2 pound raw
    5. 8-9pm- 1/2 pound raw with handful of veggies(whole raw egg twice a week)

    Non-Workout Schedule
    I use #'s 1, 3, and 5 above

My dogs weigh 44 and 52 lbs normal weight and 40 and 48 lbs when conditioned!

i feed a lot of chicken backs and chicken necks. when i feed organ meat it is usually livers and hearts. i get a box of scraps from a local butcher about once or twice a week, and it usually contains a lot of beef fat, end s of ribeyes. my veggies are green leafy types, spinach, mustard greens, turnip greens, etc....
meats and veggies should be on a 60/40 split. rule of thumb for amounts is figured this way:
multiply dogs weight by 16 to get total ounces.
multiply total ounces by .02 for feed amount.
multiply feed amount by .6 to get meat amount
multiply feed amount by .4 to get veggie amount.
then that number should be adjusted up and down based on the dogs metabolism/activity level/workload.
i don't supplement during normal feeding, only if we are working very hard. s.

We're slowly transitioning from kibble to raw - I've found this calculator to be roughly accurate.

There's a few awesome Yahoo! groups that have lots of information along with co-ops to get inexpensive places to get raw in bulk if you have a chest freezer. If you're in an area populated by deer, processing facilities will often give you belly meat for free - we get loads during deer season.

i feed the chicken backs straight out of the pack/box, same as the necks. i mix the greens in with the livers and hearts, and with hamburger whenever i find it cheap. this time of year i get a lot of deer meat, it's free so that helps a lot. that i cut hunks of meat off whatever i get and then just toss them the meaty bones. it is a crude, simple raw plan...but the dogs look good and act good this way. it is messy and time consuming in comparison to commercial feeds but much cheaper and much better for the dog...s.

just watch the weight when you start...I switched to raw and calc my dogs weights with the above chart and what they wieghed at the time of the switch....I had them on "good" kibble but when I went raw they started droping wieght quick. They will loose it alot quicker that gain it....

Oh and I throw mine chicken quarters, eggs, minute veggies, liver, lard. all raw straight from the grocier. I also throw in a chrushed multi vit and now working on adding some tripe randomly...
