by and large they dont even make good money ( comparitively speaking) human doctors make alot more.
heck, i make more than most vets as a welder, and i didnt even go to college.
its most certainly done for the love of animals, not the big paycheck

thats true there is vets here that cost 3 times the one i go to.a good vet like mine will fix your dog without money up front after being a steady customer.some will even hate yor dog for being a pit bull.always took care of porvo my self unless its a pup.

Of course vets are a "rip off."

Most of the typical "vet visits" are from people with minimum-average knowledge on dogs or people with little confidence or lazy people...

I dont have time to list all the stuff that you can do on your own instead of going to the vet.

Because I dont feel like writing an essay. But yes. Vets are a rip off. Only reason really to go to the vets is if your dog is wounded badly or has symptoms of a illness or disease and you want to get that checked out. Or doing blood work.. or swallowing something, like a battery or something stuck in its mouth ETC!. stuff like that...

ALL of the medications and treatments at the vet is a 100% ripoff.

--When I say, to go to the vet to get it "checked out", I am saying to confirm what the disease is, and then buy the treatments yourself , instead of buying from the vet which will charge you 2x-10x as much.

Vets are like Mechanics. You pay them for a second opinion or what you cant 100% diagnose yourself. I used to feel like I was getting ripped off, then I realized what I'm really paying for is Peace of Mind and to most people that is a fair deal. I don't want to be at work thinking about my dog and all "What If's" that can be wrong with him. It's when Vets or Mechanics purposely charge people more and greedily take advantage of customers lack of knowledge, that upsets me.

My Vet charges $40 per visit. If my pup isn't feeling right and I have done everything I can and he still is sick, my Vet could raise up the price to $100 that week and she will still get paid. My peace of mind or more importantly, my pup is worth it.

x2 theres alot of things vets will grossly over charge for that is simply enough to do yourself.for example the vaccines,to take a puppy to a vet to receive there vaccines its $50 for the office visit and $40 for the 7 in 1.and that's just the first set.tractor supply sells them for $8 and it doesn't really take any special skills to administer it.the wormers are another big scam they have going on there that's another $40 for an $8 pill plus $50 for the visit and $15 for the fecal.the only thing you really have to go to the vet for outside of serous injures and illness is for the rabies vac.

at http://www.revivalanimal.com/ I got like 24, 7 in 1 shots for like $75. you just have to call in and ask for the cheaper brand. Ask them for an extra ice pac just to be safe

this is what kills me- everyone wants things as cheap as possible. i mean give me a break- if you have to nickel and dime on vaccinations you have either too many dogs, need to get a job....or move to goldfish.

i for one dont mind paying a few dollars extra to know my vaccines have been properly stored. you dont know how many horror stories there have been about improper storage of the vaccines at ~other~ places.
then say your dog has an adverse reaction to a vaccine YOU administer ( not an entire longshot- it DOES happen) what are you going to do then?

then you get the idiots who dont vaccinate properly against rabies, look at all the dogs put down over the past couple years solely due to the fact their idiot owners who didnt follow their local laws regarding vaccinations.

    I agree. :)

I cringe when I'm on forums and I read people looking for "home remedies" or "how much of this" do I give, when in reality, a vet should be seeing the dog. I understand there are some things you can deal with on your own, but geez, when it comes to a dog having parvo or something serious, just take the dog to the vet. If you can't do that, then you should not be responsible for that dog.

I have the best vet on the planet, no consultation fee, only pay for actual treatment drugs etc, willing to give great tips on things that you can do easily yourself to assist recovery the man bends all ways to help and at minimal cost the animal always is put first , if you in fifty miles of worcester England pm me youll never regret it:)

  13. We have a great working relation with several of the vets in our area. We had a pup that got parvo despite having all of its shots given to it at the clinic. The vet wrote the pharmacudical company and they paid for all the treatment and vaccines for our pup. She made it and that was 4 years ago!

Thats fine for you. Some old country boys have been takin care of critters since they came off the teet.
A fella that has animal husbandry skills handed down through generations through real life situations w/ livestock can teach a vet a thing or three.

Vets have there place no doubt about it.

most that have commented on this thread should seek the advice and treatment from a DVM.

Ok you keep paying top dollar for your vaccinations. I will not throw away my money, people that make good money know how to spend their money smart. Besides, How do you think your vet gets his vaccinations, does he make them there or does he get them shipped in.

Agreed. I rather my dog get his vaccines at the peace of his home then at the vets office with some sick dogs there --- something that my dog might pick up at the vet. And I don't have time to deal with the nonsense when my dog is barking at the other dogs at the vet and some moron has something to say to me. And its not only a "couple of dollars." I get my vaccines for 5 dollars. Vet will charge $50 thats about.. hmm 10x as much. The vet will also charge for yearly anti heartworm pills with a price that I can prevent heart worms for my dog for a couple of years.

a few years back i lost a puppy to Provo.he contracted it from the vets office when i took him in to get him his Provo vaccine.i find giving the vacs myself at home especially with a puppy,is not only more cost efficient it is also safer for the pup.

I agree with you. But if someone has to come on an internet forum asking how to treat their dog's parvo, or how much of whatever to give their dog, they have no business self treating the dog. They could end up killing their own dog. That's when the person should get off their ass and go to their vet.
