I think it would just have to depend on the individual bitch in question, how healthy they are, I wouldn't ever breed a dog every heat, they always skip one or two in between to get them back in good shape. 8 would be my cut off point unless the bitch was in great shape. Breeding a dog in the teens would never happen here I don't care what kind of shape she was in thats just insane a male on the other hand, I would:rolleyes: go figure, it's always a double edged sword...JM2C

  5. Honey, people like me are the whole reason why you still have game dogs today.;) Your opinion is your opinion but my statements are based upon scientific facts supported by empirical data from legitimate canine studies, such as those from UC Davis.

  6. Oh, and Mary Jane, that pic you posted is deceiving. I have seen bitches look like that after only one litter. Please use real facts when debating. There is enough misinformation floating around here as it is. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Breeding a dog over the age of 8 is not wrong or is it bad or unethical breeding practices. If one is breeding a sound dog that is bred to standard and meets the standard, will typically not skip a beat.

  9. None the less there are a lot of opions making for some good reading!

  10. Agreed, nice 1/4 out if bred together. And yes, VERY nice yard set up. Refreshing to see someone invest good money is treating their dogs as performance athletes.

A 20 year old woman who gives birth her child can live as long as 100.
A 45 year old woman who gives birth her child may see 67.
    Same woman.
The older the egg in all mammals the more risk of a shorter life and many health issues.
So if one only breeds to improve the breed than breeding a 10 year old APBT would not improve the breed but the opposite.
MHO at 10 give the girl a break. Having a litter is hard work and she is an old dog let her retire.

  14. We are talking animal husbandry, specifically canine genetics, here, not human genetics. If we were talking about humans, then yes, you would absolutely be correct. And you also have to add on top of all of this, our breed is more adept to changes in their environments than other breeds.

    I was told by the vet I deal with who is a good vet with years of experience, if You are unsure ask These questions of Yourself;

Is she acting young or old for her age?

Are You willing to house her in a climate controled environment as the pregnancy progresses?

Are You willing and able to get a full blood screen done to check for any age-onset illnesses and liver and kidney function?

do You have any experience with the whelping proccess?

Are You willing to bottlfeed the pups if the brood starts ailing from complications and or dies?

Are You financially able to take her in for emergency treatment and or delivery and are You willing to do so?

If You are able to do these things and You are willing to lose her even though likely if she's in good health and vigor she should be fine with the right care and nutrition.
    and lots of encouragement!!!

  17. I agree. I think you should not breed unless you are able to actually do all of those things. I always did a blood work up prior to a breeding, prior to a keep, during a keep, and right before a show. I always had the birthing process occur in a quiet spare bedroom. The bitches spent the past few weeks of their pregnancy in the house.

Show me a scientific study that supports your theory how breeding a bitch multiple heats in a row or breeding an old bitch is good for her and in no way detriment to her health. Really, i would like to see it ;)
The dog pictured was popping out one litter after another and was dumped when she physically couldn't do it anymore. I won't even go into details about all the health problems that were caused by this.

Show me your scientific study that says I can't breed my 8 yr old bitch with just one litter?

I don't think the discussion is geared towards a bitch that is having the piss bred out of her. Or an average dog for that matter.....
