Its seems people prefer chain set-up versus a kennel, why?

    kennel vs. chain

the dogs preference is what they are used to, its natural. MY dogs LOVE their kennel runs....they abhor the chainspot. they have more freedom in the kennel than they do on the chain- even though the square footage is nearly identical ( 12ft chain vs. 5ft X 60 ft kennel run) they can get a good stride going in the kennel- and that is key here as we cannot do ANY roadwork due to the numerous roaming dogs.

as far as public opinion goes- to the average bored housewife-the halfway decent kennel setup looks a million times better than the best chainspot. i think the stigma comes from all the very very poor examples that have been spotlighted in recent times

They both have pros and cons!! One is not better then the other, it's just personal preference. I got the blue print for pens from the " tips" book. Another great reason for pens, is you can still have a nice looking yard, without the crop circles every so many feet. I have people over fir cookouts and the kids can run around and I don't have to worry about people touching or feeding my dogs without permission. Also, I think it's more likely for a dog to be stolen off a chain then from a locked kennel. Pens just suit my lifestyle better.

If you put a dog in a kennel or on a chain from the get go they will be used to that.

But, take a house dog and put them in a kennel or on a chain and what happens? My dogs are house dogs but we have 1 kennel and 1 chain that we rotate the dogs on. They hate the kennel and complain so much when on it even though the ground stays drier because its on higher ground and it's covered so they dont get wet (important to my sissy dogs who WONT walk in puddles). Even though the chain is down hill and gets wetter easier and isn't covered aside from the house every dog appears happier and is quieter when on the chain.

The reason I prefer a chain set-up over a kennel is that dogs appear happier to me on a chain than the ones I've seen in a kennel. I don't know if it's because they have more space or because they have a clear view, but it's just been my experience. Plus chain set-ups being less expensive are a plus as well.

If money wasn't an issue, I think I would use both. If they find a way to get off the chain, then the kennel will keep them in, hopefully. Also, I think kennels make it tougher on dog thiefs. Kennels look a little more professional if you are drwaing heat fron H$U$ or your neighbors. I would also put a privacy fence around the kennels. The more privacy, the better.

I have both and use both. I like my dogs to be used to any living situation they may encounter. I do have some that don't do well in kennels. And I have some that don't do well on tie outs. If I had the ability to choose, I would have them all on tie outs. I had to build the kennels to satisfy my wonderfull state.

I, as in me personally, Would take a good chain spot over the best made kennel any day but thats just my opinion, I'm not tring to compare either of them because it's like comparing apples to oranges. Just making my case for my personal preference;) which will always be a chain spot, you said you think the dog feels constrained when in a chain spot yet what do you think they feel like having to view everything through an enclosure?

pluse clean up is a lot easier an a chain setup than a kennel run

    to me anyway

  11. I like the runner set up. As the above posted It blows my mind why the HSUS would think a 10x10 kennel is more humane than a chain run??

We use them because I think it gives the dog more freedom and excercise. We have "conditioning" run that is about 75ft long with a 12ft chain. Between working the dog and the dog on that run they get in shape!!

I currently have zip lines, chain setups and kennels. My big boys are all on chains. I feel they are safer on a chain. Locks can be made so that a person couldn't just walk up and unlatch the dog and go....I have some that like the kennel and some that don't. I have some that will eat the wire and some that just don't. I also have the house dogs that are great as well.

Chain set ups will give the dog more room and are more reliable.. I've had dogs chew right threw their kennels.

^ fine for a puppy, or any dog up to 6 months of age-after that it is painfully too small

Rally depends on the size of the dog.

Nooo man, for a fully grown dog, other than a nursing or preg brood bitch, that's definitely too small. Maybe for a very short amount of time while your cleanin their spots, kennels or rearranging stuff on the yard, but not longer than that.

If you saw it in person i bet you would change your mind about the size. I dont keep big dogs, so for a small dog 40lbs and under, its perfect. The dogs are exercised everyday, and they're are very secure. Your welcome to come check it out for self.
Also, if you look at the picture you can see two adult dogs in the pens, so for those who think there to small, so be it. You are all entitled to your opinions, and they are appreciated.

looks to me to be about 40sq ft. ( at best) and that is too small to house a dog...even my 30 pounders
like i said- fine for a puppy, but not much more than that
