I found this article in a journal of 1997, which puts the Spanish Alano as a possible ancestor of the APBT. This is based on two arguments:
"On one side the first argument raised the american pitbull terrier breed is shaping up to root of the Spanish conquistadors in full settlement of America hundreds of Alanos led to them were making headway in this difficult task. Over the years Alanos were breed with existing local dogs in this country, and from those breedings come the American pit bull terrier. This new breed came to exceed the qualities and virtues of our majestic Alano Español.
The second way that raised the breed was in Britain, due to the large amount of imports that Britain performs Alano Español. They were fascinated by the great vitality, courage, bravery, caste and strength she showed in different lydian and hunts in which they were once used for. When the dogs were over all UK points our Alanos did as in America, they were crossed with indigenous dogs from that country without defined breed. From these crosses came the old bulldog."

I just found the article interesting, I don´t think this has to be truth, but it doesn´t have to be false anyway. Just sharing info :D

No one will ever know the true ancestry of the APBT. I wouldn't deny that the Alano could be an ancestor, but like AGK said I might be a little biased because I love the Alano and being from Galicia doesn't help. LOL.

What we do know is that 'pit dogs' came from England and ireland , the rest is guesswork and conjecture we know some of the facts but not all .... USA greatly improved on the breed from the foundation stock that came from the British isles and made it what it is today and long may the breed continue in its intended form wherever it came from or is being raised today.
