BRUNSWICK, GA -- The surviving litter mates of two 7-week-old puppies beaten to death with a sledgehammer romped, yipped and squirmed gleefully Friday at Glynn County Animal Services as an investigation continues in the case that has outraged animal welfare advocates.

The puppies' owner, Catherine Tyre, 46, of Sterling, remained jailed without bail on two counts of felony animal cruelty. In custody at the Glynn County Detention Center, she couldn't be reached for comment.

Tyre is accused of using an estimated 10-pound sledgehammer to kill the pitbull mix puppies in the yard of her Godley Road home about 11:20 a.m. Thursday.

A witness saw the beatings and called police.

"It was so barbaric ... An ugly, nasty death and it shouldn't have happened," said Beverly Morris, Animal Services director, who also responded to the police call. "All she had to do was call us and we would have come out there and picked up the puppies."

Tyre had surrendered three other dogs to Animal Services in March, records showed.

Police seized two surviving puppies, also 7 weeks, named Samson and Delilah; along with their parents, Patches and Little Girl, from Tyre's home.

"They're all good dogs. Very sweet-natured," Morris said. "The puppies had worms and fleas, but otherwise are in good condition. Patches and Little Girl also are in good shape."

Animal welfare organization officials lauded Glynn police for filing felony charges in the case. It shows the seriousness of the crime, said Cheryl McAuliffe, Georgia director of the Humane Society of the United States.

"We thank them for treating this horrific crime like any other serious crime," said McAuliffe, noting the organization intends to follow the case.

If convicted, Tyre faces one to five years in prison and fines up to $15,000 on each count.

That is disgusting. People like that deserve nothing less than a public beating. I can't even comprehend how a human being could do something that violent, Jesus Christ.
