Should pit bulls be banned in Texas?

SAN ANTONIO -- Two children have been killed in the San Antonio area in less than a week and in both cases the breed of dog responsible is the pit bull.

Pit bulls have been banned in cities and counties across the country because of attacks. The banning of pit bulls is a very sensitive issue for dog lovers, especially for responsible pit bull owners. But with two deaths in a week and dozens of attacks, lawmakers and citizens are wondering what, if anything, can and should be done.

Last week, a toddler was killed by a pit bull in the Lytle area. Tuesday morning, a family's two pit bulls killed 8-month-old baby Izaiah Cox and attacked his grandmother. Just two years ago, a pit bull killed 10-year-old Amber Jones.

"Hopefully, if you're a pit bull owner, you'll take heed to these things," San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus told News 4 WOAI.

No one argues that pit bulls can be dangerous. The argument centers around what makes them that way.

"There's a large number of people who own pit bulls," said Vincent Medley of Animal Care Services. "And, unfortunately, there's a large number of animals that are not properly supervised or properly trained."

So, should pit bulls be banned? News 4 WOAI asked several San Antonians that question.

"Maybe not ban them, maybe just have some kind of regulation," one person said.

    "I'm for it," another said.

"Within the city, I think there should be more regulation on aggressive dogs like pit bulls that have a bad track record," a third person told News 4 WOAI.

News 4 WOAI also asked Vincent Medley of Animal Care Services if banning pit bulls is a possibility in Bexar County?

"That's a question that's up to lawmakers," Vincent Medley responded.

Right now, you can't ban a specific breed of animal in Texas. But Representative Herold Dutton out of Houston wants to try.

"Trying to make sure the owners are responsible is one thing," said Representative Dutton. "But when that doesn't work, I think we have to take a look at the breed itself to stop this before it goes any further."

Right now, 13 states across the nation have a pit bull ban, within various county or city limits.

    Begin the sarcasm:
Yes, because banning "pit bulls" will totally stop dumbasses worldwide from getting another breed and having the same thing happening again, just with another dog.
    No really, it will!
I'm being totally serious here guys, BSL will totally make the average idiot go "Well, I've learned my lesson, I'm sure I'll never get another dog again"
I mean, how could an animal whose intelligence doesn't reach past that of a three year old's NOT be held totally liable for it's owner's irresponsibility? Dudes, it makes perfect sense!

According to this story, the dogs were huge and probably another indication of bad breeding which causes bad temperment.

Or another indication that people don't know what the hell a Apbt is. I have had someone call a Rottweiler that I onced owned a pitbull.

Anything with short hair gets called a pitbull. The absolute WORST I have EVER seen in my life was when a black dog with long, SHAGGY hair and a tail that almost curled like a husky's was called a pitbull by some idiot lady who saw the dog roaming loose.

I mean are you serious?? This is at least part of the problem. How many dogs involved in bites that were called pitbulls were NOT pitbulls at all? Im willing to bet a good number of them. I'm telling you, you wont believe some of the stuff i've seen get called a pitbull. it's freaking crazy.

I should have explained a little better. By "bad breeding" I'm meaning it could well have been any type bully breed and not an APBT. We know they have been bred with all types of dogs when they get into the wrong hands. Could have been Corso's or AmBully's. Pitbull is just the convenient name that get's all the heat in these situations.

Pit Bulls always take the bad rap. Regular folks don't know the difference in types of aggression, such as DA or prey drive. People think since they were bred to fight that they were bred to be vicious. When we all know here that that is not the truth. But when dumb asses get their hands on these dogs, fighting them and making them HA and breeding them to be HA.

It's a sad case anyway you want to look at it. People lost their lives due to irresponsible ownership of their dogs. I don't know what breed these dogs were because I saw no pictures. No matter the fact... I just wish there were some way the government could punish the REAL bad guys and not generalize all of us by doing it. :(

This is what i posted i did see some ares sorry

I am a Dog Trainer and i can say from my experience that Pit Bulls are the most loving breed out there it is the irresponsible owners out there that cause this problem if you Ban them then next is going to be German Shepherds, Rottweilers. All DOGS can kill it is not the breed yes Pit Bulls are Stronger yes so they can do more damage then a Poodle but dose that mean we should ban them no, the Pit Bull Breed has been trained not to attack Humans for Years!!! unlike any other breed also think about this look at the death amount from dog attacks and compare them with DUI killing there is alot less deaths form dog attack and all of the attacks are from irresponsible Humans!!! Ban Alcohol before you think about banning a breed all dogs are good it is what you make the dog!!!
