The Labrador Retriever, despite his name, did not come from Labrador, but from Newfoundland. The area was populated with small water dogs, who, when bred with Newfoundlands, produced a breed referred to as the St. John’s Water Dog, a prototype for the Lab of today. Early in the 19th century, the Earl of Malmesbury reputedly saw one of the dogs of this type and had it imported; in 1830, the noted British sportsman Colonel Hawker referred to the Lab as "the best for any kind of shooting...generally black and no bigger than a Pointer, very fine in legs, with short, smooth hair...is extremely quick running, swimming, and fighting...and their sense of smell is hardly to be credited."

I am curious of any dogs with a fighting heritage <O:p</O:p
And like I said once I saw the statement years ago and here I found it on the net <O:p</O:p
Why use the word fighting any way, I’d say it safe to say when some Brit in 1700 and up had a accidental breeding with a hunting dog to a pit dog they gave the pups a try I once new a dog man who did not even know what a SBT was that was ignorance I felt . and I'll tell you when you see the statement lab and fighting its very vague we can assume - what fighting Ducks Birds what deer worth looking into I think

I remember actually reading that on a site as well. I was doing a research project about other breeds and their history. I wasn't sure whether that was BS or not and just a crappy website.

See I remember seeing it in a book years ago
They say <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]<ST1:pNewfoundland</ST1:p dogs were used in the mix to make lab dogs
<O:p</O:p
As stated
Many believe the Newfoundland originated from crosses between Tibetan Mastiffs brought to<ST1:p</ST1:p by British or European fisherman and local dogs

6. Okay, I wasn't going to get into this, but what's with all the :p's?

I don't have a lab anymore, don't keep up with their history. I read up on bulldogs all the time. Sorry can't help you there.

Oh and a lab would never EVER attack another dog or hurt a human... riiiiiggght.... ;)

Why don't you do some research about what this person has posted in the past. I agree with pitbullin.
If people don't want to post because they are worried about comments, maybe they are better off not posting, God forbid some gets there feeling hurt! lol

I will agree all of a sudden there has been a ton of pet bull people that came on. But due to these sites being watched many good people have gone to private forums.
