Thats a sweet ass dog house. I have a question though, so do or can you insulate the house between the inner and outside wall? Is that what the space between them is for? I live up on lake Erie and our winters are brutal (we have about 3 feet of snow on the ground currently and it gets pretty cold). I have seem alot of dog houses but only a handfull built that well.

buy and cut some pink panther insulation to fit the gaps, then seal the top somehow.

or try Dap (expanding insulation used when installing windows). you can get it at home depot or lowes, but you might need to find a longer tube to spray it through so it reaches all the way down and fills up.

wonder how much you'd have to adjust the dimensions for a relatively larger/smaller dog....or just keep it packed with bedding i guess.

edit - don't know if your dog gets bored and would chew through the house, that might raise concern for what kind of insulation to use....and we need to consider hot weather, too.

this is my anti-pruning post :)

Sorry for bumping an old thread but figured it would be better than starting a new one.

I'm picking up some free plywood later today and thinking about building house similar to the one posted here. Was wondering if anyone had any more indepth instructions to building this or any plans of similar houses they've built.

I havent built this dog house i just saved the page. I saw someone on here do one very similar but used currogated(sp?) metal as a roof and insulation in the walls. You might want to put something around the entrances if the dog is gonna be on a chain. I would imagine thats the weakest point.

I've used that plan as a base but used board instead of plywood. Took a lot of time and calculations to be done but in the end it turned out nice. As well has put some insulation between the inner and outer walls.

Thanks OFK for the suggestion. Doesn't look bad, simpler than the one Cheese posted for sure. I might consider making one like that. I really want todo something more like the first house but can't seem to get a grasp on how to go about it. And I want to have a firm idea on what I'm doing before I start cutting.

Thinking about buying a decent sized chicken coop and modifying it. Any ideas on this approach?

These are the best designed doghouses for winter and summer! All you do is make the inner divider wall be able to slide/pull out making it nice and roomy for the summer. The removeable roof is a bonus in making cleaning/changing the straw/bedding real easy. I recommend painting the inner walls with a good latex paint to making it washable and add a coat of Thompson's Waterseal to the exterior....do this and the house will last for decades. (Unless your dog is a chewer!)

Thanks, that actually makes it a lot easier. I've been drawing up ideas and came up with something like OFK posted and added two boards, in a L shape, to the front to make a shield. Keeping wind and rain out.

This house is actually pretty easy to make.
The only add ons that I would suggest are angling the sides so that the roof has pitch and putting aluminum channel around the doorways to prevent the chain from damaging it. I also us 3/4" pressure treated ply and seal every summer. The gaps inside are large enought that your can make drop in panels out of styrofoam insulation for the winter.

I also us 3/4" pressure treated ply and seal every summer. I use rubber for roofing and all weather screws. The gaps inside are large enough that your can make drop in panels out of styrofoam insulation and duct tape for the winter. These can be easily removed for summer months. Remember to keep your boxes off the ground as well (use for instance a skid). Also, if your chainspots are not covered by natural shade, make a lean-to wall. Cost for the box is around $100.

I'm going to go with a 2 wall(box in a box) setup. There is a place around here that sells surplus, unused building equipment for cheap. Selling bags of R15 insulation at $15 and 2'x2' styrofoam squares at $.50. Going to use this for insulation in the walls and use cedar chips/straw as a bedding
