Well spray is a good idea but if a dog charges u off the leash and u kick it before ur dog takes care of it I bet the cops would agree with self defense...now let ur pitbull take care of the loose dog it may not be so easy. I don't want to kick a dog but lesser of 2 evils...me getting sued and my dog getting put down.

lol mtnman. last time i did that i damn near threw out my back trying to kick the other dog away from mine. i walk at night and put a muzzle on my dogs. walk 4 miles, crate, get the next dog, repeat, and repeat for the last one. i walk Termite (43 lb female chinaman dog) and a young alaskan malamute looking dog comes out of nowhere towards us at the jogging trail and stands on two feet with teeth gnashing and growling. my girl leaps forward and hits the other dog at the top of both of their stands and hugs the other dog with both her paws. she then leans forward and topples the other dog, slamming it to the ground. her muzzle prevents her from getting a hold on the other dog's chest/neck and the other dog freezes on its back after resisting for about 20 seconds.
now i've got my dog on top of the other dog and both are frozen. when the other dog on it's back moves, my dog tries to dig a deeper hold. the jogger appears from the shadows screaming his dog's name and cussing at me to get my dog off of his. i finally walk up and hold my dogs collar but tell the owner to grab his dogs collar before i pick my dog up. he calls me names and cusses me out further while leashing his dog and i step on the leash bc he's afraid to get close to the action. as i pick my dog up off his dog, it snaps but hits the end of the leash held under my foot before it can snip at her. the funny thing is i look like an asshole bc i was calm during the whole situation making it look like i'm used to this scenario and also having a pitbull with a muzzle.
i agree with mtnman about handling it so your dogs don't get into trouble but sometimes extra measures can be taken like a muzzle.

Sorry this happened to you. It's a nerve wracking thing...I've been in a similar situation twice and the adrenaline surge alone is a waste of good energy. My dog acted like he should have, but it's a drag to have a mundane walk turn into a big, unpleasant event.

Hope you get your house soon...(good boy, Hemi.;))
