hey i know theres a lot of knowledge on this site and not just about game dogs so im just looking for peoples opinions on guard dogs i know generally apbt's are bad at home protection so what guard dog would you rate the highest? rottweilers, cane corso, german shephard etc. just curious because there seems to be a lot of different opinions on the best

the ones you listed are all good as far as best it all depends on the training they get and if the owners stick with it.

Smokey024 is right, but just to give you my opinion on the matter: I have worked many dogs in the past of a variety of breeds. I used to be a member of the Smokey Mountain Working Dog Association in TN and also the Phoenix Schutzhund Club in AZ. Even though I no longer participate nor affiliate with these organizations anymore I do have an opinion for your particular question.

From my experience the best all around protection dog is the Belgian Malinois. If you can get your hands on a good German Shepperd than they are still at the top of the list, although there is a much larger range (good to bad) with the Shepperds these days. Other breeds do well, but just like our APBT's have had a higher success and percentage in the pits in the past, percentagewise, the Belgian Malinois dominate in the category of protection. There are two breeds that are used by professionals more than anything else in the world of protection/police/military work and they are the Malinois and the GS.

    My Top 5 choices:
    1. Belgian Malinois
    2. German Shepperd
    3. Rottweiler
    4. Fila Brasiliero (can verge on dangerous however)
    5. Swinsford Bandogge

1.fila brasiliero-requires proper socialization or they can become overly aggressive towards strangers
    2.caucausain mountain dog
3.Belgian Malinois- probably the smartest dog in the world
    4. German Shepperd-had one thought he wasnt a good guard dog then one day my moms ex husband came around and started yelling at her i thought my gsd was going to kill him lol-be careful to get from good working line.
    5.presa canario
    6.rott
    7.dobie
8.anything that barks when strangers come around
check them all out see which dog would fit into your life the best personaly i would want either a fila a presa or a malanois...but if it came down to it id get the fila because they are the best protector without a question they look like big handsome blodhounds and they are from brazil lol and i love brazil. man i cant wait to go back to brazil.

Depends on a lot of factors... is this going to be the only dog or in contact with other dogs? Will it live in the house or the yard? Do you have a lot of visitors? Are there children in the house? Do you have other animals (cats, livestock)? Do you want a trained protection dog or just something big and scary?

All of these will help define what you want in a dog. Then you will need to find a breeder in that breed that produces the kind of dog you want.

  8. I'd say a germen Shepard Wolf hybrid 1st
    Presa Canario 2nd.

Hmm..that Belgian Malinois looks like a Germen Shepard, just thinner.

  14. do you really want a pit bull and a dog that is for protection, because as soon a the one dog attacks the pit is gonna go at it twice as hard. it just seems like the dog you have right now that would make somebody think twice about breaking in. but the answers above are good and right now i have a boxer that bit somebody trying to steal my radio and would not let go for anything till the cops came. He's not trained for protection but is sure as hell good at it.

hey yeh i thought before i got my dog that she would act as a deterrant but it seems to be the opposite problem she attracts the wrong kind of people and anyone who knows pitbulls knows unless there with their owner a lot of the time are so friendly they would greet with a wagging tail even strangers,i honestly dont know how she would react but as there not bred for protection i wouldnt rely on her to guard

As for best guard dog. My dogs will not let anyone by my house, windows ,doors, whatever. i'm not affraid to leave my house unlocked cause they may get my TV but I'll have their ar4m or leg when i get home. lmao

The best gaurd dogs, are not suited for the vast majority of people. Malinois, Caucasion Mountain dogs, Fila's, Presa's, etc etc. A large, intimidating dog is all that is needed 99% of the time. You're not looking for a law suit, but a deterant.

I am extremelly pleased with my Mastiff at that role. She is accepting of strangers if we are around, but no one is coming in the door when we are not. In the yard, she will demand you leave, or face the consequences. I like a dog to try other means of running people off, than just tearing them a new asshole. Really don't need to come home to 15 squad cars for a maimed trespasser.

you don't need anything badass to do any kind of protection work. It also depends on what you want. If you want something to just roam the property and send of a signal when someone strange arrives, any mutt can do a bark and hold. Just because a dog is trained in guard work or protection work does not mean that he has an unlevel head and will just go off. If you want something for guard or protection work, do the world a favor and train him up properly so he isn't just some idiot biting innocent people.
