Is this an APBT (American Pitbull Terrier?)

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by RECOGN1ZED, Aug 31, 2008.

  1. I was going trough myspace last night when I came across this pic. The headline said my blue APBT. It seems real tall to me but, I know there are exceptions on the breeds height so long as it is proportionet to the breed standard. I'm curious about this. What do you guys think?

it's hard to tell by one photo.
how much does the dog weigh? what's his/her ped look like?

  3. I dont know anything about the dog. Looks like it is.....but i'm having trouble thinking they could be that tall.....maybe some people are breeding for height instead of short bully style...

Update heres another pic........I asked the owner on myspace he says he's full apbt, but he doesn't have papers.......

I agree. Not the best picture. It's hard to say. "Pit Bull", yes. APBT, not sure.

  5. I'm real curious. I'v never understood why they breed for head size/lbs/shortness/etc. Registered APBT on these sites dont even look like APBT anymore yet they are dual registered according to most sites breeding now a days. But this guy actually looks like he has the apbt conformation, just taller then average.

That dog is not too tall at all. It is a misconception brought on by the recent rash of bully breeders that short squatness is to be prefered. Most true to type apbts are a little on the long and leggy side. If you look in my images you will see a slew of true to type well bred apbt's just as tall looking as this dog. An apbt's job is to be a great athelete, thus a long and lean yet sturdy build is to be prefered. Think sugar ray robinson as opposed to sylvester stallone. Sorry to kind of attack you here, that's not my intention, but I am told all the time that pit bulls should be short and bully, but that is not the case. That said, there is a wide variance in size and shape throughout the breed. This is because the breed was bred based on function as opposed to form. Thus, you can't tell what the dog is just by looking at a picture.

i agree with the height- he doesnt look too tall at all.

Ask the owner, invite him here. Let him post more pictures for us to decide.

But on other subject, why do you care?

  9. I'm well educated in the breed thats the reason. I know the true APBT should be lean and athletic, but you never hear to much on how tall or leggy they can be. Thats why I wanted the opinions of other APBT enthusiest. Up till right now I would of though that this dog would Of been to tall for this certain breed. And I like how this dog is able to be tall yet maintains the breeds conformation and athletic lean build. Heck up untill now I would of also thought that rally racers dog is to tall to be pure APBT. Maybe a mastiff,or tall greyhound type dog down the line. But I'm sure he's as proud of the breed as I and he wouldln't lie about his dogs heritage.

Maybe you're not as educated on the breed as you think you are.

You should take a look through the game-dog.com show photo gallery and take a look at some of "real" APBTs. http://www.game-dog.com/gallery/browseimages.php?c=4

The APBT is not a cookie cutter breed (like the AmStaff). There are a lot of shapes and sizes -- within reason.

I see nothing unusual about the dog in the OP.

  12. Thanks, but there's nothing in that link that I wouldln't expect to be a APBT. Pitbull Height is something you don't see as often, and is rarely brought up in APBT discussions.

I don't think people ever really have a problem with it.

  14. Nor do I, but I never see it discussed.
