bad rep pit owners

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Pluto's Princess, Feb 1, 2005.

  1. some jackass down the street from my boyfriend's house, who just happens to be urban and a man, has an uneutered male pitbull has just created a huge problem for me, my boyfriend, and my dog. his dog ruffus, is chained up in his junky back yard with his garbage and car parts, and is really aggressive towards people, children, and dogs. well, he apparently lets his dog escape and he has attacked three people and two dogs. what a ratio! i also have a male pitbull and the neighborhood has come to the conclusion that they can decide if i have my dog neutered and when. my dog is a well trained, friendly dog, who has never had any problems and he has just been placed into a stereotype of the aggressive dog down the street. its jerks like these that give our dogs their bad reps!

Ok, has that neighbor's dog been altered? Have there been reports filed against the owner for all the bites?

Make them show you their information on why you have to neuter your dog.. state law? city law? Start giving them so many actual facts they will want to puke if they see you coming with another stack of papers.

I don't seem to get it - Another pit bull owner has a vicious dog and you are saying now that the whole neighborhood has rallied against you and they are telling you that you HAVE to neuter your dog? Just trying to understand the story here.. You and one other piece of trash are the only ones in your neighborhood with pit bulls?

edit --- not saying you are trash! Seemed to sound wrong after posted...

  4. the neighbor's dog is not altered. i repeatedly stated that my dog having his belongings did not make him aggressive towards people. there are no state or city laws requireing mmy dog to be fixed, however they pulled the "i don't feel safe with the dog around my kids". my dog isn't allowed to run about the neighborhood and comes when he is called. he has gotten out a few times due to neglegent people in the house, but has never shown aggression to anyone or any property. everyone is freaking out because he is a pitbull. i was a nanny when i bought my puppy and he was raised around babies, kids and other dogs. he has started to develop some dog aggression because he is reaching sexual maturity, but never to anyone in the neighborhood or their dogs. due to the neighborhood's concern, my boyfriends mom has also asked my to get my dog out. i am extremely frustrated! any suggestions?

  5. yes, we are the only two with pitbulls. he has lived around here longer so his pit has made a lasting impression on the neighborhood. i am trying to be as sensitive to their situation as possible, but they aren't being sensitive to mine. i legally don't have to neuter my dog, and he is proving himself more and more each day as a reason to better the breed. i am in the process of moving him to my parent's house, but that is only a temperary fix. don't get my wrong, i will never give him up! i just don't know how to go about telling the neighbors that its not their decision

As LadyRampage says, the best thing to do is to keep good documentation of what the other dog is doing, make sure all of the proper legal channels are followed, and most important, make sure and keep your dog out of anything!

One of the things that I do, and have always done, is that if I'm out walking one of my dogs, and another dog comes out - REGARDLESS OF THE OTHER DOGS BREED - is to pick up your dog and get out of there. We all know Pitbulls can do some damage if they are threatened, and we all know that if there was to be a fight between our pit and any other dog, regardless of whether the other dog was a stray, agressive, let out intentionally, etc. the pitbull is going to be the one accused and given the bad rap.

I had a very similar situation yesterday. I have a 16 week old Pit, 100% White with gray/blue eyes, and I was walking her and I know that this guy has a Rott down the street, but it's tied up and behind a fence, well when I was right up near his place, I noticed the fence was down, but the dog was still tied, so I was ok, but then I was surprised to find out that he had a huge male pit. It came out, and needless to say, I snatched up my pit and got out of there. I didn't call the pound or anything because I know pitbulls don't need more of a bad rap, but I just walked up the street and let the owner know that his fence was down, and his dog was coming out at people/dogs. He put the fence back up, although it's still very weak, but it's a step. I'll just have to keep an eye on him.

Don't know if that helps or is just a ramble, but just remember to keep documentation and keep your dog out of it.

  8. thanks you guys! bad owners like that just make it worse for the responsible ones. i feel like i need to give everyone that confronts me a lesson in pitbull 101, but you can't change the world by yourself! and that is a lot of talking! the only thing is i feel if people are going to judge my dog, they should know what the hell they are talking about!

 I kinda wondered the same thing...

    I would also say to you PLUTO - and I mean no disrespect by any means;
Letting your dog wander around a neighborhood - ANY DOG for that means is not responsible. Rather it's a loving dog or not it's disrespectful to your nieghbors property, safety, and comfort. Rather your dog is FEFE the poodle princess or GIANT the great dane, I WOULD NOT WANT YOUR DOG IN MY YARD, SHITTING IN MY GRASS, PLAYING AROUND MY CHILD, EATING MY DOG'S FOOD, TEARING UP MY BELONGINGS, or just down right making me feel uncomfortable because I don't want you as my "neighbor" to not like me because I don't like your dog on my property. It's irresponsible no matter what kind of dog you own or how good they are...
I also wonder if maybe your boyfriends mother doesn't like your dog in general? I could not understand why she would ask you to make it leave?

IS the dog that attacked three people and two dogs, DEAD? Has he been picked up? What happened with this dog?

  12. my dog never roams around the neighborhood! he has gotten out twice and i got him before he left the property. the neighbors are complaining because they know he is a pitbull. i only take him out on walks on leash.

what i meant by being urban and a man was that its obvious he is using his pit as an extension of his ego. it was not meant to be offensive or sexist in any way!

I too have had a great deal of problems due to some irresponsible APBT owners in my neighborhood. At one point they had five that freely roamed the streets. Now they only have one, due to the others being stolen, but this one still roams frequently. Even though none of these dogs were people-aggressive, people still fear them. Once I had to go calm a mob of people on the street with baseball bats and such, looking for this dog that was running loose. They all assumed it was one of mine. When police and animal control arrived, they began harrassing me about it. It certainly wasn't the first time. I don't know how many citations I've been given for these other guys' dogs running the streets. I've never paid any of them, of course. I provide quality care for my dogs, keep my licenses up to date, and take great precautions in assuring that they can't escape my yard. It's frightening to think that if another dog even resembling a "pitbull" mauled someone in my area, all fingers would point my way. I keep security cameras running 24/7 so my dogs are accounted for at all times. Hopefully this will be enough to clear my name if something bad does happen. I hate living in the city with as many dogs as I have sometimes, but it's tough finding a place anywhere with one "pitbull", let alone 10 or more.

well first off if they just found out that pitbulls are dangerous to the community, then their stupid. people that dont know much about pitbulls, always seem to think that the dogs are dangerous... your neighbors should of known that first off, why all of a sudden they decide to come to you about this now... thats just stupid, they should of said that in the first place when they saw it if they think it was that dangerous that it needs to be neutur... well its like telling them to neutur thier chowowow... tell them that thier chowowow is dangerous and it bits people... thats what i would tell my neighbors if they was to say things like that about pitbulls... its just like how when people see black people (not that iam black) they think that their going to get rob or think something bad about them... dogs are dogs, it doesnt matter if thier pitbulls or not, their always going to be dog... just like black people are always going to be human like all of us... just tell them to go eat a big fat 8====D.....

any dog regardless of breed that has attacked 3 people should be dead, even here in Canada where our laws are slack compared to the US will put ANY dog down if it bites 3 people. Unfortunatly the dont seem to care about when a dog bites another dog though, unless it is a pitbull.

I guess your neighbours are afraid of the man with the problem dog, he obviously doesnt care or his dog wouldnt be in this situation, so I doubt he cares aboput what anyone in the area thinks. They are going after you because you are an easy target I guess and they do not fear you. Personally, I try my best to make sure my dogs are good citizens and act well, but some people do not care and are very closed minded and will always havea problem anyways. I guess the best thing is to ignore them, but I just cant, get nasty with me, be prepared to get it back alot worse stand up to these pricks and they might back off
